DRESS-HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,696, dated January 16, 1894. 7

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NELLIE R. GRAY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Dress-Hook, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement in dress hooks in which the eye is obstructed from slipping off from the end of the hook by means of a short bend in the lower outside wires to the hook, projecting upward near the point, and also said wires extending forward beyond the bottom end of the hook to which end the fabric may be secured to which the hook is attached and the edge thereby prevented from turning backward and exposing the hook. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the figure is a perspective view of one form of my invention but various modifications of the bending of the wires of which same is formed may be made without departing from my invention.

' The hook may be made of any suitable material, preferably wire of proper size and bent into the form as shown in the drawing in which a is the point of the hook, I) is the bend and c c are two'eyes formed for the purpose of securing the inner end to the fabric to which same is attached. These eyes are formed by. bending the wire around outwardly and then inwardly close to the body of the hook. The eyes thus form loops which are substantially closed on all sides.

at d are upwardly projecting bends in the wire, the office of which is to obstruct the eye from unhooking. These said wires are then carried forward as far as desired beyond the end of the bottom of thehook and turned at right angles (in the drawing) with the eyes e e formed in their extreme ends whereby the same may be secured to the material to which it is desired to attach same. These projecting wires h h may be formed so as to lie along the outside of the body of the hook or they may be turned inwardly and lie between the body of the hook, the forward projecting ends being formed in various ways and shapes to accomplish substantially the objects sought.

In the ordinary dress hook the same is only attached to the fabric by the eyes a c and where the same is near the edge of the material the edge tends to turn backward from the hook when the hook is firmly drawn for: ward, whereas in my construction the edge of the cloth' is further secured and fastened to the eyes e e and the stiffness of the wire of which the hook is formed prevents the edge from turning or rolling back from the hook..

'Hooks have been described wherein the wire extends beyond the point of the hook and then returns, but does not form a close eye or loop. Such I do not claim.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

The dress hook consisting-of a single piece of wire having eyes or loops at its ends, and having also eyes or loops formed by return bends of the wire which eyes are adjacent to the point of the hook, and having upwardly extending bends in proximity to the point of the hook and between the eyes at the ends of the wire and the eyes near the hook point, all substantially as described.
