Be it known that I, LUTHER C. CROWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-ll/Iachines, fully described and represented in the following specication and the accompanying drawings,form ing a part of the same.
ro The object of the present invention is to provide an improved printing machine capable of delivering a variety of products with mslight adjustments, and especially to provide a high capacity machinefof compact and con- :5 venient form combining with a web printing mechanism a plurality of delivery mechan` isms to either of which the web may be led from the printing mechanism.
In web printing machines of Vthat class in zo which the web is printed at one end of type4 -and'imprcssion cylinders and then reversed by a web turner and perfected at the opposite end of the cylinders and then delivered to the delivery mechanism,the delivery mechanism need occupy but one-half the width of the machine, as the web handled by it has a width of only one-half the length of the type and impression cylinders. I provide an improved construction by which the capacity of such machines for producing different products is increased without increasing the floor space of the machine, by combining with the printing mechanism two delivery` mechanisms placed side by side and each ca- 3 5 pacitated to handle a sheet of the full width produced by the printing mechanism, and arranging the printing mechanism so that a web may be perfected at either end of the cylinders as desired, so as to be delivered by either of the delivery mechanisms.` The delivery mechanisms thus combined with the printing mechanism may be of any form desired in accordance with the products to be produced, and my invention includes broadly such a combination of delivery mechanism with a printing mechanism independent of the specialform of the printing or delivering mechanisms employed, but l attain an especially desirable result by thus combining with the printing mechanism a fiat and a folding de- Serial No. 447,977. livery so that the papers may be delivered open full size, or folded to the form desired. The fiat delivery may be added to machines of the general construction now commonly employing'a folding delivery on one side of 55 the machine in combination with a perfecting printing mechanism, there being ample space for this purpose at the delivery end within the frame of the machine and this flat delivery is preferably made a collecting delivery capacitated to collect a number of sheets and deliver themV flat, as by a fly or equivalent device. It is evident, however, that my invention may be applied to machines of widely different constructiomand that my invention is not dependent upon the variety of products produced by the folding mechanism. In the accompanying drawings, however, I have shown for the purpose of illustration a machine embodying my invention 7o capacitated to produce a very large variety of products by the folding mechanism or to collect and deliver a plurality of sheets flat as desired, the machine being of the general construction shown in my Patent No. 453,407, 7 5 to which I have applied a collecting Hat delivery located in the space beside rthe longitudinal folder and above the devices for giving the second longitudinal fold, the printing mechanism being arranged so that the web may be perfected respectively at either end of the type and impression cylinders as preferred.
The machine may be used with any suitable offsetting devices or without the same, but I prefer to use offset devices on the last or perfecting impression, and I have combined with the printing mechanism arranged for the change inthe lead of the web, as above described, offset devices which may be shifted to either side of the machine in accordance with the end of the type and impression cylinders at which the web is perfected,l and this construction forms a part of my invention. l 95 For a full understanding of my invention adetailed descriptionv of the machine above referred to will now be given in connection wit-h the accompanying drawings forming al part of this specification, and the features roo forming my invention specifically pointed out in the claims.

Referring to said drawings it will be seen that the machine including the printing mechanism and folding delivery is of substantially the general construction shown in my Patent No.I 453,407 above referred to, A being the type` cylinder, B the impression cylinder, C theweb turner, D the ink distributing cylinder,.lt` theweb roll from which the web is fed, F the longitudinal folder by which the first fold of the web is formed and G the fold 'ing delivery fully described in the patent above referred to, so as to require no further description here, these devices being capacitated to produce products varying from a four page paper to one or more pamphlets of one hundred and twenty-eight pages each.

This construction diders from that ofthe patent referred to, in that the conducting roll 13 is not positively driven, as it is necessary for the direction of rotation of the two parts to be changed in accordance with the lead of the web, and this roll is formed, therefore, of two independent sleeves` frictionally driven by the web. This printing mechanism, as abovcstated, may be used without odset devices or any suitable construction of such devices may be combined therewith. I prefer, however, to use an offset web on the last or perfecting impression, and to enable this odset web to be shifted in accordance with the lead of the web ,I preferably mount the odset rolls upon a carriage by which they may readily be shifted to either side of the machine as desired. In this construction, I-I is `the carriage in which are supported the odset rolls 15, 16, these rolls being made interchangeable, as usual, and the support of the roll 16 from which the offset web is drawn being provided with the usual adjustable tension devices. The odset web y is led from the roll 16 about a roll 17 extending across the machine above the two part conducting roll 13, then downward between the Webm and the impression cylinder, returning around the conducting roll 14 be neaththe web .fr and thence over a guide roll 18 to the odset roll 15 upon which it is wound. The roll 15 is rotated to feed the odset web by two rough faced friction rolls 19 upon which the odset roll rests, the roll being mounted in bearings free to move upward as the size of the roll increases, as usual insuch constructions. The carriage H may be held in position by the screw 20, as shown, or by any other suitable means.
The friction rolls 19 are driven as follows: The main shaft of the machine I drives the impression cylinder B through gears 100,101 on the main shaft and impression cylinder respectively, and the main shaft I drives the delivery mechanism through a series of intermediates 102 which drive the folding delivery through a gear 103 on shaft LK from which movement is transmitted to all the folding devices as from shaft 123 in Patent No.453,407, above referred to. Throughthese intermediates 102 a shaft L is driven by gear 104 and from this shaft all the iiat collectingdelivery is driven. It will be seen that by shifting one of the intermediates 102 from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the stud 105 the fiat collecting delivery will be thrown out of operation, and the folding delivery into operation, the machine being shown as delivering flat. From one of the intermediates 102 the friction rolls 19 are driven through asmall intermediate 106, which secures the proper direction, and gears 107 on the rolls.
The `flat collecting delivery is mounted upon the frame at the side opposite the longitudinal folder Fand may be of any suitable form, and it will be understood also that a simple flat non-collecting delivery may be used if desired. In the machine shown, however, I have illustrated a dat collecting delivery which is preferably used, in which sheets are. collected from the web by a collecting cylinder and delivered directly to a fly, but this collecting mechanism in itself, forms no part of the present invention but is claimed in my application, Serial No. 423,561, filed March 3, 1892, and onlya brief description of the same IOO under an adjustable tension roll 21 and be-4 tween spring pressed feed roll 22 and the collecting cylinder M so as to secure the proper feed of the web to be seized by the pins of the collecting cylinder, but it will be understood that any other suitable arrangement may be used for this purpose. The collecting cylinder M is cut away for the pins and the strippers by which the sheets are delivered'from the pins, and preferably consists of a series of disks 23 mounted on a shaft 24, with bars extending the fulllength of the cylinder and between the disks so as to form a cutting groove 1 co-acting with knife 2 of the cutting cylinder N to sever the sheets.
Between the disks 23 are mounted the sheet holding pins a and strippers b, the pins being set at the proper angle to seize and hold the successive'sheets and the strippers being formed of fingers, preferably made of thin rigid metal and provided at their outer ends with openings through which the pins extend. The pins a are mounted on a shaft 3 extending through the disks23 forming the collecting cylinder, which shaft carries at one end a crank arm 4 connected byalink 5 to a crank arm 6 on shaft- 7 which carries the stripper b and is mounted in the disks 23. The shaft 7 of strippers b carries at one end a crank arm 8 provided with a bowl which runs in a cam plate 25v mounted to rotate on the shaft 24. It will be seen that by this construction as the shaft 7is rocked tothrow the strippers outward and carry the sheets off the pins ct, the pins aresimultaneously rocked upward toward the strippers, thus following the motion ofthe sheets as they are pressed off the cylinders by the stripper b andpermitting them to be readily removed withoutidanger of tearing the sheets. By actuating the pins positively and independently of the engagement of the pins by the strippers, I obtain a smooth and uniform movement at very high rates o-f speed, and there is practically no wear between the pinsl and strippers, so that these parts will stand such speed for a long time without renewal, this construction thus being well adapted'for'high speed newspaper machines.
In front of the collecting cylinder M and above the fly O, a feeding roll is preferably mounted, this roll being cut away opposite the pins a and strippers b and formed preferably, as shown, by a series of disks 26 mounted on a shaft 27 carried in arms 28 on rock shaft 29, the disks being held under spring tension against the collecting cylinder M by aspring pressed rod 30'connected to a crank arm 31 on rock shaft 29. The disks 26 co-act with the collecting cylinder M between the pins a and strippers b and feed the sheets forward after they are received from the` pins and thus aid in securing their delivery to the fly O.
The fly O consists of the usual series of fingers mounted on a rock shaft 32 actuated to deliver the sheets by a spring pressed bar 33 secured to crank arm 34 on shaft 32, asusual in such constructions, the shaft 32 being rocked in the opposite direction to return the dy O against the spring tension by a rocking lever 35 connected to a crank arm 36 on shaft 32 by an adjustable pitman 37, this lever 35 being provided with a bowl which runs upona rotating cam 38 mounted in the frame, the shaft 32 being extended through the machine and the lever 35 and cam 38 being mounted at the folding delivery side of the machine for convenience in driving.

feed roll 22 and shaft 27 carrying the spring pressed disks 26 are driven from gear 110 by gears 111, 112, respectively. Just inside the frame at the folding delivery side of the machine, the shaft L carries a small gear 113 which meshes with a larger gear 114 carried by the shaft of cam 38, the latter being thu's driven. In the construction shown, the parts are so timed that the shaft L and consequently the collecting cylinder M make two rotations to each rotation of the impression cylinder D, and t-he fly O makes oneI movement to each four rotations of the collecting cylinder, the machine being designed to print two sheets at each rotation ofthe impression cylinder, so that four sheets are collected and delivered together. It is necessary, therefore, that the pinsa and the strippers b be actuatedonce to each four rotations of the collecting cylinder. For this purpose the can18 must be driven at a somewhat higherrate of speed than the collecting cylinder M. In the construction shown the cam 25 is driven from IOL.
the shaft of the cutting cylinder N by a gear 118 on said shaft meshing with a somewhat smaller gear 119 on the cam, these gears being so timed that the cam makes about five rotations to four of the collecting cylinder.

The operation of the construction will be understood vwit-hout detailed description, it being understood that the collecting cylinder M coacts with the cutting cylinder Nto sever and collect four sheets during which time the pins ct and strippers i) are stationary with the pins in position to seize the successive sheets, and that the cam 25 in its more rapid rotation than the collecting cylinder Mcatches up with the cylinder just as the leading ends of the four collected sheets have passed the disks 26 on the fourth rotation of the cylinder, and the cam then operates the pins and strippers through crank arm 8 and connections previously described so as to Withdraw the pins and throw the lending ends of the sheets off the cylinder and into position to be received by the fly, as the sheets are then advanced by the disks 26 co-acting with the cylinder, the fly being then operated to deliver the sheets as they reach the proper position in front of the fly.
It will be understood that my invention is not to be limited to the special machine shown, as this machine has been selected only for the purpose of illustration and as well adapted for the embodiment of my invention, a compact machine capacitated to produce a very large variety of products being thus provided. Vhile my invention is especially adapted for application in connection with Web perfecting mechanisms employinga single type cylinder and perfecting a Web of a width less than the length of the type cylinder, my invention is not to be limited to such a construction, asitis applicable also in connection with other printing mechanisms capacitated to print and perfect at opposite sides of the machine and arranged to perfect at either side.
Although especially designed for use in web printing machines, my invention may be applied also to other classes of printing machines, in which the paper is fed to the printing mechanism in the form of sheets.
By the expression a printing mechanism capacitated to print and perfect at opposite sides of the machine and arranged to perfect at either side, I mean and intend to cover a printing mechanism so constructed and arranged that a web or sheet may be perfected at a single run through the machine by printing the first impression at one or the other side of the machine, and printing the second or perfecting impression at the opposite side of the machine, so that the web or sheet may leave the printing mechanism in convenient position for delivery byeither of two delivery mechanisms placed at opposite sides of the machine, in accordance with the side of the machine at which the second or perfecting impression is made.
l. The combination with a printing mechanism capacitated to print and perfect at 0pposite sides of the machine and arranged to perfect at either side, of two delivery mechanisms arranged at opposite sides of the machine, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a printing mechanism capacitated to print and perfect at opposite sides of the machine and arranged to perfect at either side, of two delivery mechanisms, producing products of dierent forms, arranged at opposite sides of the machine, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a printing mechanism capacitated to print and perfect at opposite sides of the machine and arranged to perfect at either side, of folding and flatdelivery mechanisms arranged at opposite sides of the machine, substantially as described.
4c. The combination with a printing mechanism capacitated to print and perfect at opposite sides ofv the machine and arranged to perfect at either side, of a foldingdelivery mechanism at one side of the machine and a flat. collecting delivery mechanismat the opposite side of the machine, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a web perfecting mechanism, h'aving a single pair of type and impression cylinders and capacitated to print and perfect a web at opposite ends ot' the cylinders and arranged to perfect at either end, of two delivery mechanisms arranged at opposite sides of the machine in position to receive the web from opposite ends of the cylinders, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a web perfecting mechanism, having a single pair of type and impression cylinders and `capacitated to print and perfect a-web atopposite ends of the cylinders and to perfect at either end, of offset devices adj nstable to opposite ends of the cylinders, and two delivery mechanisms arranged at opposite sides of the machine in position to receive the web from opposite ends of the cylinders,substantially as described.
7. The combination with a webperfecting mechanism consisting of a pair of type and impression cylinders and a web turner and constructed and arranged to perfect at either end of the cylinders, of two delivery mechanisms arranged at opposite sides of the machine in position to receive the web from opposite ends of the cylinders, substantially as described.
8. The combination with a web-printing mechanism having type and impression cylinders A, B and web turner C, of folding delivery F, G at one side of the machine, and fly O and devices co-acting therewith tosever sheets from the web and deliver them to said fiy at the opposite side of thel machine, substantially as described.
9. The combination with the Webprinting mechanism having type and impression cylinders A, B and web turner C, oflfolding delivery F, G, at one side of the machine, and Hy O and a sheet cutting and collecting mechanism delivering sheets to said fly at theop- IOO posite side of the machine, substantially as f LUTHER C.
