SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,5 77, dated January 9, 1894- Applioation filed September 4, 1893. Serial No. 484,684- (No model.)

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. CLARK, of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented cer-v tain new and useful Improvements in Incubators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved heat regulating device for incubators and consists in the novel arrangement, combination and construction of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and designated in the claims.

Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of an improved chimney which I use in carrying out my invention. Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective of a damper regulating mechanism.

Located in the upper end of the hood, a little to one side thereof and provided with its bearings in the side is a horizontal rockshaft 5 which is constructed with a bell cranklever 6 at one end, said lever being provided with a set screw 7 'for the purpose of adjusting said lever on the horizontal shaft.
Connected to the lower projecting end of the lever 6 is a horizontal rod 8 which connects said lever with a vertical lever 9, the lower end of which is pivoted at 10.
11 indicates a thermostatic rod which is located in the incubator in the ordinary way, one end of which projects through the end of the incubator and is pivotally connected to the vertical lever 9 at 12. I
Rigidly connected to the horizontal rockshaft 5 and extending down into the hood 2 a suitable distance is a damper 13.
14 indicates a deflector which is connected to the side of the damper 13 adjacent the passage 4.
15 indicates a partition which is located in the upper side of the passage 4 as shown in Fig. 2, one end of which extends into the hood 2 a suitable distance for the purpose hereinafter stated.
Located in the lower end of the hood is a detachable damper-regulating device 16 which is constructed with two projections 16 and 16". The projection 16 extends upwardly from the bottom of said hood at an angle of about forty-five degrees, thence upwardly a suitable distance above the lower end of the damper 13. h The projection 16" is of like construction, but does not extend upwardly as far above the lower end of the damper 13 as the projection 16 does. 'These projections are so constructed as to form an opening 17 between their upper ends in which the lower end of the damper 13 is located.
18 indicates a lamp of ordinary construction, which is held in position by a bar 19 which is connected to the brackets 20 and 21 which support the hood and. its connections.
The lamp 18 is provided with a metal chimney 22 the upper end of which is connected to the lower end of the hood 2. The chimney 22 is constructed of three portions 23, 24 and '25, the portion 2% being connected to the lamp in the ordinary way and connected to the portion 23 by an annular flange 26 formed on the upper end thereof which is engaged by a flange 27 formed on the end of the portion 23. The portion 25 is the same in construction as the portion 23, but not so large in diameter, the lower end being provided with a flange 28 which is also engaged by a flange 26.
The portions 23 and 24: of the lamp chimney 22 are provided with peep-holes 29 which are covered with mica or the like material. These peep-holes are to allow the operator to inspect the light.
The operation is as follows: When the thermostat is cold the lower end of the damper 13 is drawn over to the left against the vertical portion of the projection 16' as shown in Fig. 2. hen the damper is so drawn it draws the deflector 14 carried by said damper so that the free end of said deflector is against the inwardly projecting end of the partition 15, thus closing the opening between the projecting end of the partition and the upper end of the vertical portion of the projection 16'. When the lamp is lighted the heat radiating therefrom will draw up through the deflector 16 and 17 and out through the passageway l into theincubator. When the heat becomes too great the thermostat will expand, thus drawing on the rod 8 which is connected to the horizontal rock shaft 5 which carries the damper 13 by the bellcrank lever 6, and by so drawing will move said damper in the position shown by solid lines in Fig. 2, or in case the heat is too great it will draw the damper over till the lower end is against the upward end of the projection 16", thus cutting off the heat from the incubator entirely. When the damper is in the last mentioned position, the heat from the lamp will be drawn out through the upper end of the hood 2.
To prevent waste of heat I have constructed the passageway with the partition 15 located as shown and described. When the heat is passing through said passageway it will come in contact with the portion 15 which will heat the same, and the heat radiating from the upper surface of said partition will be carried to the incubator through the opening which is formed between the upper side of the partition and the upper side of said passageway. The portion of the lamp chimney 22 being located as shown and described it will prevent waste of heat. The heat from the lamp first coming in contact with said portion, the heat radiating from it will be carried into the lower end of the hood 2 by the opening between said portion and .the portion 23 of the said chimney, thus saving heat that would otherwise be wasted if it were not for the portion 25 of said chimney.
What I claim is 1. A heat regulating device for incubators comprising a vertical hood, a damper the upper end of which is pivotally connected to the upper end of said hood, a deflector ih combination with said damper, and a device for limiting the movement of the lower end of said damper in combination therewith, substantially as set forth.
2. A heat regulating device for incubators comprising the following elements, to Wit: a vertical hood, a passage way 4 connecting said hood with the incubator, a partition 15 located in said passageway so that one end projects into the hood, a rock shaft 5 located in the upper end of the hood, said rock shaft so connected as to be operated by a thermostatic rod, a vertical damper 13 the upper end of which is rigidly connected to the rock shaft 5, a damper regulating device 16 detachably located in the lower end of said hood, projections 16' and 16" which regulate the swinging motion of said damper a portion 23 of the lamp chimney 22 the upper end in combination with the regulating device 16, and a portion 25 located in the portion 23 of said chimney so constructed as to form a passage between said portions which opens into the lower end of the hood 2, substantially as set forth.
