CHARLES H. TRIPHAGEN, OF PORTLAND, MICHIGAN.
MOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,492, dated January 9, 1894. Application filed October 1'7, 1893. Serial No.-488,41] (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it mwy'concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. TRIPHAGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Mops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the bail and its connection to a mop handle, and further in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is aside elevation of`my improved mop head. Fig. 2 is a Vertical, central, longitudinal section therethrough.
A is the mop stick or handle.
B is the cross-head secured at the end thereof and provided with the usual groove C iu which the bail D is adapted to engage to hold the mop cloth in position upon the cross-head. The bail I preferably form of wire, as shown having the side guide bars E, the clamping bar which I have lettered D and the inclined arms F which extend from the guide bars inwardly to the mop stick and are provided at 'their ends with hooks having the vertical guide portions G at the ends.
H are slots on opposite sides of the mop stick in which the guide portions G of the hooks engage and slide.
I is a spring sleeve over the mop stick and over the portions G of the hooks holding them [irmly inthe slots and acting to draw the bail-tightly against the cross-head to clamp the cloth in position when inserted between the bail and cross-head. This construction very greatly simplifies and cheapens the manufacture of the mop, at the same time making it easyto operate.
In order to open the space between the bail and cross-head, the operator presses upon the upper ends of the inclined arms F, compressing the spring which moves the bail away from the cross-head and allows the insertion of the cloth. Upon releasing his hold the spring will tightly clamp the cloth in position.
What I claim as my invention is- In a mop stick, the combination of the handlc, the cross-head thereon, the bail slidingly engaging with the cross head and having hooked upper endsadapted to engage in slots in the sides of the handle and the spring sleeved over the handle and hooks, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I atx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. TRIPHAGEN.
