LORENZO GOODRIOH, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
METAL ROOFING-SHINGLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,188,'dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed June 12, 1891. Renewed August 18, 1893- Serial No. 433,481- (No model To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO GOODRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Roofing-Shingles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a longitudinal central section taken on line 00 x of Fig. 2 showing two of the shingles connected together; Fig. 2 a top plan View thereof, and Fig. 3 a detail view in perspective showing more clearly the joint connection between the two shingles.
The object of the present invention is to provide a sheet metal shingle for roofing purposes which will possess both strength and durability and at the joint when the shingles are connected together will have the necessary rigidity and firmness necessary as a pro tection against the weather, such as wind and rain storms and also heat and cold incident to the changes of the weather. To attain these several objects I construct a shingle in substantially the manner as shown in the drawings and which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings A B represent two shingles constructed of sheet metal in accordance with "my invention and connected together.
The shingle may be of any suitable size and shape and in order to strengthen the shingle it is embossed in any suitable manner and with any shape of figures found most desirable, the embossed or raised surfaces in the present instance being of diamond shape as shown at a.
The shingle at one of its edges has an upwardly turned flange bterminat-ingin'a curved reinforce c to give the necessary spring to the flange and also preserve its strength necessary to form a secure lock withthe opposite shingle. The curved reinforce c terminates in an inwardly extending lip 01 to lock with the edge of the opposite shingle.
The opposite edge of the shingle is bent upon itself to form a double thickness hookedflange e and the raised rib f over which fits the curved reinforce c, the extremity of the edge extending to form a flange g for fastening the shingle to the roof or other object by nails or like means.
The two edges of the shingles are locked together as shown in Fig. 1 by engaging them from the ends as commonly practiced in this class of shingles, and when so connected a covering for a roof is provided that will resist storms of whatever nature and also one that will not be affected by the cold and heat.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sheet metal shingle having one of its edges bent to form an upwardly turned flange b, the curved reinforce c and inwardly extended lip d, and the opposite edge having the hooked flange e, raised rib f and fastening flange g,substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An embossed sheet metal shingle having at one edge the upward-turned flange, curved reinforce c and lip d, and the opposite edge having the hooked-flange e, the rib f, and fastening flange g, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LORENZO GOODRIOH.
