FOOT FOR DREDGES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,083, dated January 2, 1894. Application filed January 3l, 1893. Serial No. 460,302. (No model.)

To all whoml it may concern;

Be it known that I, EDWARD WooDs, of Sault Ste. Marie, in the county ol. Chippewa and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Foot for Dredges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved foot for dredges, which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to readily open and close to facilitate the hauling of the dredge foot usually embedded deep in the mud.

The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the figures.

Figure lis a side elevation of the improvement showing the wings open. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same showing the wings closed or folded; and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the improvement.

The post A, is provided near its lower pointed end A with a transverselyextending pivot pin B, engaged by the sets of leaves O and O', secured to the wings D and D', respectively, adapted to open and close, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the said wings when opened resting with their top surfaces against lugs E and E', respectively, secured to the sides of the post A.

When the wings D and D are spread out, as shown in Fig. l, they form a solid foot for the post A to securely hold the latter in place at the time the foot is immersed in water and embedded in the mud. On the front and rear faces of the post A are fitted to slide the blocks F, V-shaped at their bottoms to engage the inner edges of the wings D and D' when the latter are swung open, asshown in Fig. 2, so as to prevent mud, dirt and other material from clogging up the joint of theY wings. The blocks F are held in place by a pin extending transversely through a vertically-disposed slot A2 formed in the post A near the blocks E and E.

It will be seen that a dredge provided with a foot of the construction described and shown in the drawings, is securely held in place and the post with the foot will readily come up as soon as the dredge swings and raises her anchor.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A foot for dredges, provided with wings pivoted to each other and adapted to bear the one upon the other in their open position, substantially as shown and described.

2. A foot for dredges, comprising a post, and wings pivoted to each other on the said post and adapted to bear the one upon the other in their open position, substantially as shown and described.

3. A foot for dredges, comprising a post, wings pivoted to each other on the said post and adapted to bear the one upon the other in their open position, and blocks held on the said post, and adapted to limit the upward swinging motion of the said wings, substantially as shown and described.

4. A foot for dredges, comprising a post, wings 'pivoted on the said post and adapted to open and close, and blocks fitted to slide on the post, and adapted to engage the inner edges of the said wings to ll the gap between. the latter when they are in a closed or Afolded position, substantially as shown and described.
