Description

NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIA E. MEYENBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BUILDING-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,043, dated January 2, 1894.
Application iiledAugnst 10, 1892. Serial No. 442,696. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIA E. MEYENBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Building-Block, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in building blocks.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive building block which may be rapidly laid, and which will when laid interlock, and thereby greatly increase the binding action of the blocks.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective View of a building block constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the manner in which the blocks interlock. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of one of the building blocks.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a hollow building block made up of a series of cells and provided with a series of longitudinal openings 2 and having one end 3 closed and having its other end open'. The closed end 3 is provided opposite the `longitudinal openings with a series of projections 4 which conform to the configuration of the opening of the block, and are adapted to tit into the open end of another building block of similar construction as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings. The projections and openings of the blocks are within the edges or areas of the ends of the-block, and form interlocking joints similar to mortise and tenon, and do not permit a sliding movement as would be the case were ribs or tongues and grooves employed.
The building blocks are preferably oblong in horizontal section, but any other regular form may be employed and any desired number of openings and their companion projections may be employed, and I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to tlie precise details of construction herein shown and described, as such changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. The building blocks may be rapidly laid, and as soon as one is laid it inter-locks with the preceding one, whereby the entire blocks of a building have their binding effect greatly increased and serve to sustain one another. The closed end 3 forms a series of transverse webs which greatly increase the strength and durability of the blocks, and also prevent to a great extent the noises incident to many hollow building blocks. It will be seen that the mannerof interlockingthebuilding blocks greatly increases the strength of the structure, and that a perfect and firm joint is assured; that there will be no difficulty in maintaining the building blocks in proper position untilthe cementeinployed inbuilding hardens and that the building blocks enable a structure to be rapidly, firmly and strongly built to a great height.
A hollow building block made up of a series of cells and having one end closed, and pro` vided on its closed end with a series of inter- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as4 my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JULIA E. MEYENBERG.
