SMOOTH ING AND PRESSING IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,032, dated January 2, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JENs JENSEN, mechanioian, a subject of the King of Denmark, re-
siding at Kolding, Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoothing and Pressing Irons, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved smoothing iron.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved smoothing iron. Fig. 2 is arear end-view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan-view of the iron, the handle being removed. Figs. 4 and 5 represent a gas burner suitable for use in connection with the iron, being respectively a plan and a section thereof, and Fig. 6 represents a lamp adapted for burning spirit or other liquid fuel for heating the smoothing and pressing iron.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Upon the top of the iron K a flexible or spring plate G is arranged. To this plate is attached the handle A. The plate is hinged at the rear end of the iron by means of a hinge-pin G to a burner in the hollow iron K. The front portion of the plate is fork-shaped and embraces the latch H, which is so connected with the pointed front end of the iron as to be capable of being turned up and down as required when the operative or ironing surfaces are changed (Fig. 3) and serves as a means for turning the iron K about the lam 5 burner or other source of heat.
Into the rear end of the iron is introduced the gas burner I or liquid fuel lamp I. It can be secured by means of a bayonet lock or in any other suitable manner. When the ironing surface is to be changed, both the handle A and the plate G are turned up and the iron is caused to turn about the lamp I or burner'I', so as to present the required surface for operation. The plate G, together with the handle A, is then pressed down again against the upper surface of the iron, and the latch H is inserted into the forkshaped front end of the plate G. The heated surface is now in position for ironing, while the surface which had been in operation is now turned into a position over the flame and is being re-heated for subsequent use.
Having now particularly described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a hollow smoothing iron, of a burner projecting into one end of the same and mounted to turn in said end, a spring-plate pivotally connected with said burner, a handle on said plate, and a swinging latch on that end of the iron opposite the one at which the plate is hinged, which latch serves to lockthe plate on either the top or bottom of the smoothing iron, substantially as set forth.
