REEL FOR WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,023, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed February 23,1892- Serial No. 422,399. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILIP HAUCK, a;citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Reels for \Vire-Stretching Machinery, of which the foling is a specification.
My invention has relation to reels for wire, particularly that used in stapling books, pamphlets, &c., and in fastening the corners of paper-boxes. As is well known, the wire employed for these purposes is quite stifi and, to a considerable extent, resilient, is wound into the usual rolls and secured in such condition through the medium of tie wires. Now, owing to the unmanageability of this wire when unconfined, the removal of said tie-wires, before the roll is secured in the reel,
has proven inexpedient, because of the resultant loosening of the coils and the consequent snarling and buckling of the wire, seriously impairing, if not destroying, its usefulness and entailing the exercise of considerable ingenuity and loss of time in the en-" deavor to straighten out the complication. While the restoration of the roll to its original condition, without again subjecting the wire to the coiling operation, is, ordinarily, an impossibility. At the same time, Where the sides of the roll of wire are closely embraced, in order to keep the coils in place and said roll in proper shape in the ordinary form of reel, the tie-wires are tightly held between the sides of the latter and the roll, prevent ing their withdrawal. \Vhile, if clearance be left to permit of the removal of the tie-wires, the coils will become loosened, after such removal, and drop into the space left by said tie-wires and, eventually, project over the sides of the reel, where the wire is liable to become tangled up with other parts of the machinery with which the reel is connected.
My invention contemplates the obviation of all these difficulties by the provision of a reel adapted for reception of and embracing the sides of a roll of wire, tie-wires and all,
and permitting of the removal of the tie-wires therefrom without the grasp of the sides of the reel upon said roll being released. Such invention consists of a base-plate having radial ribs on its inner side and provided with a central hollow hub, the latter having radial wings which form a core or center for the roll of wire, and, at their ends, afford a base or rest for a similarly ribbed removable capplate. Saidhub is also provided with lugs or projections whose innermost edges are outside the plane of the cap-plate, the central opening in this plate being of such shape as to permit of its clearing the lugs or projections and encircling the hub, and being kept, normally, in line with the latter through the engagement of lugs, on such plate, with certain of said wings; also, in the provisionof a cam-faced nut, having an opening similar to that of the plate last mentioned and for a like purpose, adapted to be interposed be- .tween the cap-plate and said project-ions and turned into wedging relation therewith, causing the impact of said ribs, only, on the sides of the roll of wire; the intervening spaces permitting of the ready'removal of the tiewires therefrom and the pressure of the ribs preventing the unnecessary loosening of the coils of wire and the consequence thereof, dispensing with the necessity for closing up the space between the sides of the reel, or the provision of separate meansfor confining the coils of wire within such reel; while the provision of a device for retarding the motion of the reel, when in operation, avoids the unreeling of said wire to an extent greater than is required.

Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the face and under side, respectively, of the lock-nut.
In said drawings, A represents the shaft or spindle which we will suppose to be in the proper position relatively to the machine upon which the stitching or other operation is to be accomplished, and B the base-plate or back of the reel, the same abutting against the shoulder a of said shaft and having integral therewith the central boss or hub b, the latter being provided with the opening I) for reception of said shaft, and having on its outer end the lateral projections b b The radial wings I), integral with said hub and plate, form a core for the coil or roll 0 of wire.
D is a removable cap-plate or disk having thereln a circular opening d provided with lateral extensions 01 of a shape corresponding with, and for the purpose of permitting the cap to pass over, the projections 19 b and, at ts center, encircle the shaft a. Said cap-plate 18 provided, on its inner side, with the lugs (1 which engage with those of the wings b which are in alignment with the projections 11 13 serving to keep the opening d opposite sa d projections, Where it is in position to perm1t of the ready removal of the cap, when necessary, without necessitating the turning of the same for such purpose.
As will be observed, the cap D is provided with spokes (1 as is also the plate B, the portlons between such spokes having been removed for purposes of lightness, while said cap and plate have on their inner sides the r bs 6 d the latter being formed on the ins des of said spokes and abutting against the sldes of the coil or roll 0, when the same is placed on the arms 19 or core as shown in Fig. 2, said coil or roll being arranged in the reel 1n such manner as to permit of its tiewlres c occupying the intermediate spaces between certain of said ribs. The cap D having been placed in position, after the coil or roll, the lock-nut E, provided with the semicircular cam-faced shoulders e e, is next brought into use, such nut having therein a central opening e provided with extensions e similar'to the opening din said cap, which opening and extensions permit of said nut being passed over the projections 19 b and encircling the shaftA and being brought, at its under side, into contact with the face of the cap. In this position the lowermost portions of said shoulders are below the plane of the under sides of said projections, whereupon said nut is turued,through the medium of the spanner F, or other device, which grasps one of the lugs e of the nut,--until the stops e meet the projections b b the .highest portions of the shoulders e e( being thus forced, wedge-like, under said projectlons and a jamming action exerted on the cap D by the nut E, said cap being thereby locked rigidly in the position hereinbefore described and the ribs b 03 caused to bear tightly on the sides of the roll of-wire, thus firmly securing the latter in the reel. The reel is now placed on the shaft A and the retainer G in a like position, the latter being secured by the thumb-screw g in such manner as to cause the free ends of the curved springs g 9 which latter are secured in recesses in the arms 9 g of the retainer, to exert a gentle pressure on the cap 1), such pressure being only sufficient to prevent the undesired rotation of the reel, under the momentum resulting from its rotation, when the drawing of wire therefrom has ceased, wlthout retarding such rotation when said reel is in operation. The retainer G, at the same time, serves to keep the reel on the shaft and against the shoulder a thereon. The tie-wires c, of the coil or roll 0, may now be removed, the spaces between the ribs 1) d affording clearance therefor and allowing of their free passage, and the free end of the reeled wire led into operative relation with the stapling devices or machine, in which such wire is to be used, without the danger of any other part of the roll, or the coils thereof, unwinding, whereupon the manufacture of the books, pamphlets, paper'boxes, or other operation, 850., proceeds in the ordinary or any preferred manner.
What I claim as my invention is as follows:
1. In awire-reel, the combination of a baseplate; a central hub; and a removable disk, said plate and disk having on their opposite sides radial ribs adapted to be brought into clamping relation with the sides of the roll of wire, the spaces between said ribs affording clearance for the removal thereafter of the tire-wires from such roll, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a wire-reel, the combination of a removable disk, a base plate; a central hub provided with lateral projections normally outside the plane ofsaid disk; andalock-nu't having a central opening provided with lateral extensions which permit of its passing said projections and encircling the hub, said nut being also provided with cam-shoulders for engagement with the projections and adapted for interposition between the same and the disk, exerting a wedge-like action on the latter, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In areel, the combination of a base plate, a central boss or hub having lateral projections, a removable disk on said boss or hub, and a lock-nut intermediate the disk and projections, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a wire-reel, the combination of a baseplate having integral therewith a central hub; radial wings integral with 'thelatter and form: ing a core for the roll of wire; and a removable disk, said plate and disk having on their opposite sides radial ribs adapted to be brought into clamping relation with the sides of the roll, the spaces between said ribs affording clearance for the removal thereafter of the tie-Wires from said roll, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a wire-reel, the combination of a baseplate; a central hub provided with lateral projections; a removable disk having a central opening provided with lateral extensions, permitting it to clear said projections and encircle the hub; and a lock-nut provided with an opening similar-to that of said disk and for a like purpose and having cam-shoulders for engagement with the projections and adapted for interposition between the same gagement with the projections, said nut being adapted for interposition between the latter and the disk and having lugs for facilitating its operation, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
