Description

(No Model.)-
0. 1). ,HUNKINGQ PUSH BUTTON- Patented Jan. 2, 1 8
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES DUSTIN HUNKING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PUSH-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,953, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed January 6, 18 93. Serial No. 457,571- (No model.) I
v To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES DUSTIN HUNK- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and usefullmprovementinPush-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates 'to improvements in electric push buttons, or analogous signaling apparatus, in which the electrical circuit is opened or closed by the action of two metallic points, or of other conducting media, and consists in combining with the mechanism of the said apparatus, an electric current indicator,
and in providing the plate which covers thesaid mechanism, or the knob or actuating device thereof, with a transparent opening or window, through which the indicator may be observed.
The object is to indicate to the operator of the push button, when the circuit is closed, whether a current passes or not, in a simple and convenient manner. This object I attain by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1. is -a push button with its plate containing the opening or window, through which is seen the indicating device, represented with the circuit open. Fig. 2. is the same, with the plate removed, showing the indicator with the circuit closed. Fig. 3. is a vertical section of Fig. 2, with the circuit open. Fig. 4. is a push button with its plate, showing the opening or window in the knob, through which the indicating device may be seen, represented with the circuit open. Fig. 5. is the same, with the plate removed, and showing the indicator with the circuit closed. Fig. 6. is a vertical section of Fig. 5.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
B represents a push button, to be used in an electrical circuit. The frame workb'. supports the metallic plated. and the metallic spring 19., on which rests the knob P.
M. is the insulated coil and m. the core of an electro-magnet, connected in the circuit by-the wire e., and to the terminal plate a, by the wire a. and the binding screw d.
C and 0'. represent the negative and positive wires of the circuit.
O is connected to the terminal spring 19, by the insulated wire 0' and the binding screwf.
1. represents a transparent opening or window, (which may be covered with glass or other transparent substance) in the plate I). of the push button, or in the knob P. of the same, and through which the pivoted indicating needle 11, may be seen. This needle may be made heavier at one end than at the other, in order that it may return by gravity, after deflection, to its former position. A solenoid may be substituted for the electro-magnet.
The indicator may be rendered visible in the dark by covering the needle or its background with luminous paint. When several push buttons are in one plate, a single indieating device may be used for all.
On pressing the knob P., the springp. comes in contact with the plate a. and closes the circuit. The current passing through the coil M, magnetizes the core m. and deflects the needle. When the pressure on the knob is removed, the circuit is opened and the needle returns to its former position. I
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A push button or circuit closer, comprising circuit terminals, a transparent opening, a pivoted index needle in or below the same, and an electro-magnet in the circuit of the terminals for operating the needle, substantially as described.
CHARLES DUSTIN I-IUNKING.
