LEONARD V. STEIMER AND GEORGE 'l. MOORE, OF VVESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
WHIP.
SPECIFICATION forming pait of Zetters Patent No. 511,816, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed April 24, 1893. Serial No, 471,667. (No model.)
To (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LEONARD W. STEIMER and GEORGE T. MOORE, citizens of the United States, residing at VVestfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVhips; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to carriage whips, and whips of every other kind having a covered stock.
Our invention further relates to a means for stiffening and strengthening the center or core to prevent the completed whip becoming crooked, and also in continuing the strengthening material or strip beyond the loop end of the whip for the purpose of forming said loop from the same material which is used to strengthen the core.
Our invention consists of the construction and combination of devices forming the complete whip hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of our invention, Figure 1,is a view of the complete whip. Figs. 22* are enlarged part elevations and part sections of a portion of the same showing the manner of strengthening and stiffening the whip and preventing the entrance of moisture to the core. Fig. 3, is an enlarged cross sectional view of the same on the line' m-cc of Fig. 2. Fig. 4:, is an enlarged view of a portion of one of the strips of narrow fabric for strengthening and stiffening the core. Fig. 5, represents the loop end of the whip.
In the said drawingsArepresents a core or stock composed of any suitable material, such as raw-hide, and B is a thin sheet or film of waterproof substance, such as rubber, placed over and inclosing said core to prevent the entrance of moisture and air, which is of the utmost importance in whips having a rawhide core as such cores are peculiarly sensitive to changes in the atmosphere, even when covered with thread and varnished. Over this rubber covered core or center we then place a lining composed of narrow strips of fabric 0, placed equidistant around said core and extending the full length of the whip body, the said strips of fabric being each composed of a plurality of individual threads a of suitable material laid side by side and united by a body of adhesive material 1), whereby the threads are not only united to form a fabric but they are stiffened by the addition of the adhesive material and are or made especially effective as an inner lining forthe whip. Inmanufacturing this fabric we prefer to run any desired number of threads together over a drum and making them adhere by sizing. WVe then wind the completed fabric on spools, and place four or more of them in a machine suitable for covering whips and run said narrow strips at an equal tension the whole length of the whip as a lining or support for said Whip under the outer cover. The strips of fabric not only extend the full length of the whip but project beyond the loop end and pass through and form part of theloop by being woven into the same, thereby strengthening the loop cfor the snap d, and keeping the whip more nearly straight and preventing its becoming crooked to anyconsiderable extent. When the stock or core has been thus covered it is ready for its outer covering 6 when it is finished in the manner common to the manufacture of whips.
A whip constructed as above indicated is very pliable and strong and is strengthened by the addition of the fabric strips as a covering or inner lining for the core or center so that the whip will retain its shape and be maintained in a straight condition.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 9o 1. A Whip comprising a core, an outer plaited covering, and parallel threads united by sizing to form a fiat fabric, said fabric being for the Whip, substantially as hereindeing interposed between the core and outer scribed. cover to serve as an inner lining, and extend- In testimony whereof we aflix oursignatures ing the full length of the whip and woven into in presence of two witnesses.
5 the loop, substantially as herein described.
2. A whip comprising a core, a surrounding Q' Sg film orsheet of rubber, parallel threads united J by sizing to form a flat fabric applied the full Witnesses: length of the whip and extending beyond and J. L. HANCHETT, 10 through the loop, and an outer plaited cover- JOHN D. LONG.
