F. STUTZM CUTTER HEAD FOR PANEL R G MACHINES.
N0.511,471 Patented-Dec. 26, 189.3.
. M420 v I 5 b AWWQW U IT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK ST'UTZMAN, OF WILL'IAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUTTER-HEAD FOR PANEL-RAISING MACHINES.
sracmxcn'rron formingpart of Letters Patent No, 51 1,471, dated December 26, less. Application filed ll'anuary 31, 1893. Serial No. 460,337. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK STUTZMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamsport, in. the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter- Heads for Panel-Raising M achin'es; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in cutter heads for panel raising machines and consists in the novel features hereinafter fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the said drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of my improved cutter head. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a central transverse sectional view of the cutter head, and Fig.4 is a-view similar to Fig. 1 showing the cutter head turned one quarter of the way around.
In the drawings A represents the main body orblock of my improved cutter head which is provided with a pair of oppositely inclined faces a a to receive planing knives and a central aperture a which receives the shaft with which the cutter head is revolved, the said A is secured a planing knife B having its cutblock being also provided with a set screw a for securing it to the shaft.
Upon each of the inclined faces of the block ting edge 12 inclined in the plane of said inclined face, the incline'of said edge bearing such a relation to the inclination of the face a upon which the knife rests, that every point in the edge of the knife will be at the same distance from the axis of rotation of the cutter head as will be observed by reference to the drawings, particularly to Fig. 3 thereby compensating for the inclination of said face. It will thus be seen that the planing knives Bwill have ashearing cut as the cutter is retated. The knives B B are, secured to the block A by bolts 1) 12" passing through slots b b in said knives to allow for adj ustin g said knives upon the inclined faces which they engage. The ends of the block'A are planed at right angles to the axis of rotation and at one end the block is provided with a pair of molding cutters O G. These cutters are preferably formed as shown substantially circular with their outer faces formed to correspond with the style of moldingwhich they areto cut. Each cutter is recessed at one point in its periphery as shown at we and said recess is provided at one side with an inclined face forming an acute angle with the periphery of the cutter which constitutes an irregular cutting edge 0' which will cut the molding as the cutter revolves, The central portions of the sides of the block A which are not engaged by the knives B are made substantially parallel instead of following the diverging edges of the knife engaging surfaces thus forming recesses in the sides of the head block as indicated in Figs.1, 3' and 4 and at the end of the block adjacent to the widest portions of the knife engaging surfaces, the block A is provided with webs or flanges a The corrugated molding cuttersO C are secured to the end of the block. A by bolts passing through the flanges or webs a? and nuts 0 as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. By this construction a cheap and most efiicient means for securing the molding cutters is provided, the nuts of the So securing bolts lying in the'recesses in the sides of the block. It will also be seen that the molding cutters are held against the ends of the planing knives and these devices are thus given an additional degree of security while two cutters are brought into the relation to secure'the best results from them. When the cutter is in operation it will be seen that the straight knives B B will act as planing knives havinga shearing cut as before described, and the cutters C C will form the molding. By the use pf this cutter it will thus be seen that panels and other work of like character can'be readily formed. I
What Iclaim, and desire to secure by Let- 5 ters Patent, is-- 1. In a cutter the combination with the head block having two faces inclined to the axis of rotation, and the intervening'sides recessed and provided with webs connecting the [O0 inclined sides at one end of the block, of 9 planing knives secured to the inclined side's" of the block, and molding cutters secured to cutters by bolts or nuts passing through said 10 said webs by bolts and nuts, the nuts of said webs or flanges, substantially as described. bolts lying in said recesses, substantially as In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in described. presence of two witnesses.
5 2. n a cutter the combination with the a r head block having planing cutters and hav- FRANK STUIZMAN' ing the recessed sides provided with Webs or Witnesses: flanges, of molding cutters secured to the end JOHN H. WATSON, of the block against the ends of said planing J. W. HAYS.
