SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,069, dated December 19, 1893.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seaford,
in the county of Sussex, State of Delaware,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy Machine-Guns, which improve-' ment is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Myinvention consists of a toy machine gun to or cannon having a plunger in the barrel or bore thereof, a magazine in communication with said here at or about the head of said plunger, means for controlling the feeding of balls or ammunition into the gun, and means for retracting the plunger, releasing the same and impelling it against the ball in front of the plunger, as will be hereinafter set forth. Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a toy machine gun, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section of a portion on line w, as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section of a portion on line y, y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a gun or cannon in the barrel or bore of which is a plunger B, whose head 0 is beneath the tube or magazine D which is secured to the gun in a direction at an angle to said bore, 0 and communicates therewith between the muzfle and breech. Encircling the plunger is a spring E, which bears against the head 0, and a plate F which is secured to the wall or shoulder at the inner end of the bore, the 5 corresponding portion of the plunger passing through and being guided by said plate, and projecting into the breech chamber G, where the end is provided with a pin or stud H, the latter being adapted to engage with 3,0 the cam J of the form of a groove or flange on the disk K, it being noticed that the ends L and M, of said flange are separated, and said disk: is secured to the shaft N, whose bearings are on the wall of the chamber G. 4'5 On the inner end of the plunger B is a pin B which plays in a groove B in the side of the chamber G, the same serving to prevent turning of the plunger. Connected with the outer end of said shaft N is a crank handle P, whereby rotation may he imparted to the shaft, and consequently to the disk K and Serial No. 474,899- (No model.)
cam In front of the magazine D is an elastic finger Q, which occupies portion of the chamber R in the wall of the gun and has its lower end freely enter the bore thereof in advance of the head (1 of the plunger.
The magazine is filled with balls, pellets or other suitable projectiles S, which are placed one on top of the other, the lower one resting on the head 0. 4
The operation is as follows: The handle P is rotated, whereby the disk K is also rotated, and the cam .I engages with the stud H at the end L thereof, and as said cam rideson said stud the narrowing diameter of the cam causes the stud to withdraw the plunger, or move the same in rearward direction, the spring E being compressed. The head G clears the bottom of the magazine D, whereby the lowermost ball drops into the bore of the gun, and the finger Q acts as a stop to prevent said ball from rolling toward the muzzle end of the gun. \Vhen the cam has completed its circuit, the end M of the same disengages from the stud H, and as the latter is no longer controlled by the cam, the

subsequent operations are repetitions of those stated.
' In order to support the gun, the same is mounted on the stand and connected therewith by a joint T, which permits the gun to be sighted, or its range to be adjusted.
The breech U of the gun is made removable so that access is had to the chamber G and the parts contained therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr 1. A toy machine gun having a magazine in communication with the bore thereof, a plunger in said bore with a head closing the said magazine, a rotary cam engaging and operating said plunger in one direction, and a spring for operating said plunger in the opposite direction, said parts being combined, substantially as described.
2. A toy machine gun having a magazine in communication with the bore thereof, a plunger with a head normally closing said bore, an elastic finger adapted to enter the bore in front of the plunger, a rotatable cam, a stud on the plunger and engaged by the said cam, and a spring bearing against the head of the plunger and a plate through which the plunger moves, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A toy machine gun having a plunger, a breech chamber, a cam in said chamber, a shaft carrying said cam mounted on the walls of said chamber, said cam being adapted to alternately engage and release said plunger,
and means for rotating said shaft on the out-- side of the gun, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. A toy machine gun having a plunger therein, a magazine communicating with the bore thereof between muzzle and breech, a stud on theinnerend of the plunger, a breech chamber, a cam in said chamber engaging said stud to retract the plunger, a shaft carrying said cam and adapted to be rotated outside of the gun, and a spring bearing against the plunger to impel the same against the projectile fed from the magazine, the ends of the cam being separated and the head of the plunger primarily closing the communication between the magazine and bore of the gun,
the parts named being combined substantially plunger for preventing turning of the latter,
said parts being combined substantially as described.
