BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,987, dated December 19, 1893. Application tiled December 27. 1892. Serial No. 456,338. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER F. Pnn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a buckle formed of a frame, a tongue mounted on the rear cross bar thereof, and a lift continuous of the tongue, the sides of the frame adjacent to said cross bar being bent laterally, so that the axial portions of the tongues and the lift are of the same width as the frame, and the frame is strengthened at the places of junction of the cross bar.

It also consists of the novel construction of the eyes of the tongue, whereby they are easily formed and require less metal, and the tongue may be properly raised from the frame, as will be hereinafterfully set forth.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a buckle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top or plan view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a section on line :r, a), Fig. 2. Referring to the drawings:-A designates a buckle formed of the frame 13, the tongue 0, and the lift D, the latter being continuous of said tongue, the several parts in the present case being constructed of suitable wire.

On the rear of the frame A are the inwardly extending pieces A forming a cross bar on which the lower portion of the eyes E of the tongue are mounted, said eyes being formed by bending the metal in the form of a loop, the inner walls of which are recessed as at F, to seat the cross bar freely therein, this construction also permitting the walls of the loop to be brought closely together, as most plainly shown in Fig. at. The sides of the frame adjacent to the cross bar or the angles formed by said sides and pieces A of said cross bar are bulged outwardly or laterally, forming a crimp G, within which the portion of the eyes that embrace the cross bar are located and turn, by which provision the rear portion H of the tongue, and the cross pieces of the lift are of the same width as the frame or approximately, the lift thus presenting a wide surface for contact of the fingers, whereby the tongue may be most conveniently handled for the opening and closing of the tongue.

The loops which form the eyes E, serve to raise the rear end of the tongue from the frame, so that the proper inclination or angle is imparted to the tongue, whereby the point of the tongue readily pierces the fabric or material to be secured, and accidental releasing of the same is prevented. The bulges G also act as cri n1 ps orcorrugations,which vastly strengthen the cross bar A, which receives the main strain on the buckle. The pieces which form the cross bar are made short, so as to be somewhat separated, but they may be lengthened, and th usbrought close together if so desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A buckle having a frame with inwardly extending rear pieces A, and outwandly projecting crimps G the loops E, E, receiving said pieces, and rising above the same, the tongue C and lift D, said tongue and lift projecting respectively from the upper ends of the two walls which form each loop, said parts being combined substantially as described.
