' UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BAPTIST, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
TRIPLE-FILE DRIVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,873, dated December 12, 1893.
Application filed March 81, 1893. Serial No. 468,465- (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BAPTIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Triple-Pile Drivers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in a triple pile driver and its novelty will be fully understood when taken in connection with the annexed drawings and specification, and the objects of my invention are to construct a pile driver for closing crevasses, driv ing heavy piles or sheet piling in rapid running streams, and enabling one, twoor three piles to be driven at one operation. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a side View.
Similarletters referto similar parts tli roughout both views.
In the drawings A are upright pieces of timber, and are so constructed as to form guides for weights J to travel up and down.
B are two diagonal guides for the weight J driving the brace pile, and acting as brace .ot' pile driver.
C is a brace. I
D are wheels of truck of pile driver, and which enable same to moveback and forth on track Q.
E is a gate which is adjusted in such a manner as to wing loosely upon a cross frame piece attached to frame or track Q, the ends H of said gate being padded or covered with rubber or other plastic material to prevent water from washing out filling or soil deposited between rows of piles.
F show piles driven.
G is a brace pile which is placed on an incline and which can be used where it is necessary to form a brace, and is driven by means of a weight J shown in Fig. 1.
M is a brace.
N is a rope for operating guide I, and enabling pile to be held in position against .pressure of water when placing pile in position for driving.
0 is a rope for pulling up a pile for driving.
P is the rope for pulling up the brace stream, and the pile driver run out upon the truck, and sheet or other desired piling driven as shown as F inFig. 2, the piling being driven on each side of the track Q, thus forming two rows of pile, with pile G to form a brace. As the piles are driven and the track Q is extended farther across the running-stream, I am enabled to place between the rows of piles a sufficient amount of soil and other filling to form an embankment, and by means of door E, the soil is prevented from washing out. The arms I may be used on each side of track Q, and in running water is of great ad vantage in handling a pile, holding same in proper position against pressure of water and. is easily operated by means of rope N.
Where desired three piles may be driven atone operation, or if preferable one or two may be driven at once, as necessity may require, or sheet or heavy piling may be driven at the same time.
A striking advantage of my device is the economical construction of same, and enabling three piles to be driven at one operation in running water.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is or may be operated, I would say in conclusion that I do not limit myself to the precise details shown in illustration, as the same may be varied to some extent, but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pile driver, the combination of the piles and means for driving them, with the door hung between two of the said piles and provided with a padding, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pile driver, the combination of the piles and means for driving them, with the door loosely hung between two of the piles,
and the ends H secured to the door, and pro-,
vided with padding, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a pile driver the vertical weight guides A, the weight guide B extending diagonally across the vertical guides, and means for operating the weights, combined with the piles,
and the door hung below and between two of to the said piles and provided with padding, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BAPTIST. \Vitnesses:
M. I. JAYEs, D. N. FRIsBIE.
