DOOR-BOLT.
`'SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 510,781, dated December 12, 1893.
Application led May 25, 1893. Serial No. l75,500. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN GAEDTKE, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
In this door bolt the bolt is moved by a lever arranged to have strong leverage and io the bolt is thus specially adapted for heavy doors, but it can also be applied on smaller lscale to all sorts of doors, windows, closet doors and the like. The lever is so arranged that at the ends of its throws it enters a corresponding recess or cut in the base and said lever can be locked by a key and looking pawl.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings in which- Figure l is a rear elevation partly in seczo tion of the bolt open or drawn. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. l. Figs. 3, and 4 are views respectively similar to Figs. 1 and 2 the bolt being closed or shot to its locking posi-Y tion.
The bolt is inserted or set into the edge of a door or door section in the usual way and is arranged as follows: The base or supporting plate a has eyes or guides c c for the bolt b which latter is jointed at (l to the link 3o e. The link e is jointed at h to lever f fulcrumed to the base at g. The base has a cut or recess t' into which the lever enters at the ends of its throws so as to lie flush with the face of the base or support a.. The lever f has a slit or eye k into which engages the tongue or looking pawl Z having its hub or pivot m made to turn on base a. The tongue Z is actuated by a key (not shown) inserted into a suitable key hole in hub m. The base y 4o a has an eye or hole p and the link e has a cap or hood n which in the position of parts shown in Figs. l and 2 comes to rest behind the eye p and prevents the penetration of dust and foreign matter. A similar cap or hood n is secured to the base a back of the eye p in said base. The lock Z serves to keep the bolt. locked until released by a suitable key.
The bolt operates as follows: In the posif tion of parts shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the finger of the operator is inserted into recess or eye 5o p to grasp the leverf for swinging the latter upward or toward bolt b, whereby the link c is moved to withdraw bolt b to Vthe open position shown in Figs. l and 2. To lock the bolt the movement is reversed, the operator reaching into recess p to grasp the leverffor turning the latter down or away from bolt b. The lock Zbeing then turned or swung into the slot k secures the bolt against improper opening. In oase the leverf should not have 6o been moved by the operator to the extreme end of either throw said lever will finish the throws under pressure of spring q. Said spring q is secured to link e and tends to force lever f toward base a said spring q acting on the plan of the well known jack knife spring.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy The combination with a base plate a hav- 7o ing the upper and lower recesses p p and provided with a bolt b, of an actuating lever fpivoted to the base-plate, and a link e pivoted at one end to the lever and at the opposite end to the shank of the bolt and provided in juxtaposition to its pivotal attachment to the bolt-shank with the hood n which covers the upper recess p in the base-plate when the bolt is withdrawn from its locking position, substantially as described.
