SCREEN FOR CARRIAGES.'
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,773, dated December 12, 1893'.
Application filed February 20, 1893. Serial No .46Z,945. (N model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES HAINES OAFFREY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Screens for Carriages, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Myinvention consists of a main screen for a carriage or other vehicle, which is adapted to be connected with the pole or shafts of the same in front of the body of the vehicle, and back of the single tree or double trees.
It also consists of an auxiliary screen which is suspended below the main screen, as a cont-inuity thereof.
It further consists of screens on the side 0 the main screen for preventing dirt from the wheel striking the animals.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a screen embodying my invention.\ Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of portions of the same in separated condition. Fig. 3 represents a view of the parts shown in Fig. 2, in connected condition. Fig. t represents a side elevation of the plate which is fastened to the pole of the vehicle, the same being on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view showing the main screen connected with the shafts of a vehicle, and also showing one of the side screens. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of one of the fastening clips of the side screens.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-. sponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings:A designates a screen whose rim is bent upwardly at the center of its lower side forming an opening B, pr ferably of arch-shape, to receive the pole O of a carriage or other vehicle, said screen being located back of thedouble trees. Projecting rearward from the ends of the arch B are cars D, which are located upon and bolted to the plate E, the latter having bolt openings F and ears G in front and rear of said plate. Clips H embrace the pole and have their legs passed through the ears G, and provided with nuts J, it being seen that as the ears D are secured to the plate E, and the latter is tightly connected with the pole, the
screen A is sustained in a firm, steady and reliable manneron said pole.
K designates ascreen which is located below the screen A, as a continuity thereof, and provided with an earL whichislocated against the under side of the plate E and bolted to the same and t0 the ears D, whereby as the plate E is secured to the'pole O,'as has been stated, and the ear L is connected with said plate, the screen K is held firmly suspended from said pole.
Projecting from the sides ofthe screen A are ears M, which are adapted to be secured to the shafts N, when the latter are used in lieu of the pole C, said shafts thus sustaining said screen, the screen being back of the single tree.
In order to preventdirt, &c.,-from the wheels striking the animals, I employ-side screens P, which are sustained on the screenAby means of clips Q, each of which is doubly-tubular, one portion embracing the rim of the screen A, and the other portion embracing the rim of the screen P. A screw Ris passed through the neck S of each clip Q and clamps the two portions of the clips to the rims of the screens, whereby the side screens are nicely and firmly sustained, and they may be adjusted in height or removed when desired, and afterward readily reapplied and secured in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A screen for a vehicle having an arched opening in its bottom wall, the walls of said opening being adapted to fit the pole of the vehicle, said screen being provided with cars, a plate adapted to be placed under said pole and engaging said ears, and clips for engaging said pole, said parts being combined substantially as described. 2. A screen having an arched opening inits bottom wall, the walls of said opening being adapted to fit the pole of a vehicle, said screen being provided with ears, and a plate under said pole consisting of a body having ears with openings for clips, and openings for the ears of said screen, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A screen having an opening in its bottom wall, ears on said wall at said opening, a plate hicle, said screen being provided with ears, a lower screen having an ear L, a plate under said pole, said plate consisting of a body having openings for engaging said screen ears and said ear L, and provided with ears hav ing openings for clips which engage said pole, said parts being combined substantially as described.
JAMES HAINES OAFFREY.
