PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,742, dated December 12, 1893.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DWIGHT F. WALKER, a citizen of the'United States, residing in the cityand countyof Philadelphia, State of Pen nsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Holders and Cutters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in paper holders and cutters, and consists of a head which is adapted to form a weight, a cutter and a feed or device for unrolling the paper as will'be hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 representsa front view of a paper holder and cutter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section thereof on line as, m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a'view of a detached portion thereof. Fig. 4 represents a transverse vertical section showing the head in a different position from that in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5 represents a horizontal section of a portion on line y, y, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 represents a side elevation of a portion of a modification. Fig. 7 represents a side elevation thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a base with standards 13 rising therefrom.

C designates a'roller whose journals D are mounted on the standards B in recesses E therein.

F designates a gravitating head which is provided with journals or gudgeons G, and constructed of quadrilateral, prismatic or other suitable shape in cross section, with cutting edges H at the angles or corners thereof, said gudgeons G being fitted in either of the recesses J in the standards B, it being noticed that the recesses J diverge from the recesses E, and that access is had to either of the recesses through the grooves K which are interposed between the recesses E and J.

On the roller C is the paper to be held and cut, it being noticed that the head F is placed in position by introducing the gudgeons G through the recesses K into either of the recesses J, and then raising the head, after which the roll is introduced and its journals seated in the recesses E, and the head is then dropped orplaced on the roll of paper, as shown in Fig. 2.

The operation is as follows: W hen it is desired to cutoff a piece of paper, the latter is pressed against the adjacent edge of the head F, and run across the same after the manner of apaper holder. Should the edge of the portion of the paper remaining on the roll be beneath, or be covered by the head, whereby it is inconvenient of access, the head is rotated, whereby its edges take hold of the paper and feed the same forward, as will be seen in Fig. 4., thus presenting sufiicient paper to be grasped by the hand and further unrolled. As the roll of paper decreases in diameter, the head F descends, and so exerts its weight upon the roll, thus preventing the latter from improperly unrolling and causing the paper to be severed or out clean and sharp, it being run across the edge of the head.

Owing to the diverging grooves or recesses J, and the ability to introduce the gudgeons of the head F in either of the same, the head may be made operative from the right or left, according to the location and disposition of the device.

In Figs. 6 and 7, I show theroller and head mounted on hangers K, the same having diverging recesses L for the head, bottom recesses M for the roller, and intermediate grooves N for the introduction of the respective gudgeons and journals into said recesses L and M. The hangers K may be connected with a counter, table or other suitable placeof suspension.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1; In a paper holder and cutter, a roller for the paper, in combination with a rotatable head vertically movable in its journal bearing and adapted to bear on the paperon said roller, andhaving cutting edges, substantially as described.

2. A paper holder having standards with recesses therein, a roller journaled in said recesses, and a rotatable cutter journaled above said roller in continuations' of said recesses,

said parts being combined substantially as described.

5. In a paper holder and cutter, a roller and a head in combination with a support for said roller and head, said support having recesses for the journals of the roller, diverging recesses for the gudgeons of the head, and intermediate grooves for introducing said journals and gudgeons into the respective recesses, substantially as described.
