Beit known that I, FREDERICH A. DIEFFEN- BACH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Washers; and vI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical device for washing the wheels of carriages and analogous vehicles; the same consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings: Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of my wheel-washlng device; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same partly in transverse section; and Fig. 3, a detail front View of a sprinkler-head forming part of said device.

Referring by letter tothe drawings A represents a preferably segmental water-way. The one herein shown comprises wooden sides, united by any suitable means, and a sheetmetal plate joined to the curved lower edges of said sides. The upper frontcorners of the water-way sidesare cut away on arcs of circles to give clearance for the hub of a wheel, and as herein shown I provide said waterway sides with vertically' disposed cleats B to which metallic feet C are suitably secured.

In order to vary the angle of the water-way A and thereby accommodate the same to wheels of less than a predetermined maXimum radius I employ pivotal rear legs D, and as a matter of preference these legs are made from gas-pipe united by couplings b to upper and lower braces E, F, of like material, the former brace being loose in openings in the sides of the water-way and set nuts c relatively arranged on this brace, as shown in Fig. 2, serve to clamp the legs in their ad# j usted position. Upon its interior each side of the water-way is provided with a series of horizontal cleats d having inclined upper edges. Fast to these upper edges of the cleats are strips e of rubber or other suitable water proof material thatV converge toward each other in pairs, as is also illustrated in Fig. 2. The upperedges of the water-way sides are made somewhat concave to form seats f for a pair of pipes G perforated at regular intervals of their lengths and the front ends of these pipes are provided with heads H having perforations therein. As herein shown the pipes G are suitably connected to a transverse union I having a branch g provided with a coupling J for a hose or other cohveyer leading from a source ot' water supply.

In practice the sprinkling devices are connected to a water supply systemr and the water-'way positioned so as to receive a vehicle wheel previously elevated by means of a jack placed under its axle, this wheel being indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l. The water is now turned o n and the wheel rotated by hand in order that its hub, spokes and rim may be washed, the water in its descent from the sprinkler pipes G being diverted from one side to the other of .the water-way by the deflectors above specified. The washing having been completed, the wheel is rinsed olf by' giving it arotation in a direction opposite to that at which it was previously turned.

Having thus described my invention, what 0 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i l. A suitable water-way, sprinklingpipes mounted thereon, suitable means for the connection of these sprinkling-pipes with a source of water-supply, and deflectors upon the interior of the water-way, substantially as set forth.

2. A suitable water-way provided with pivotal rear legs, sprinkling-pipes mounted on the water-way, and suitable means for connecting the sprinkling pipes with a source ot' water supply, substantially as set forth.

3.
