Be it known that I, ROBERT JULIUS DARBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troup, in the county of Smith and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Sand- Band for Vehicle-Hubs, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in sand bands for vehicle hubs.

The objects of the present invention are to improve the construction of sand bands for vehicle hubs, and to provide one of great cheapness, which may be readily applied to a hub.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination andarrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sand band constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a sand band, the axle clip being detached.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs.

1 designates a sand band designed to be secured to an axle and to project over the inner end of a hub, and consisting of a tapering band having an enlarged or slightly flared outer end 2 and provided at its contracted in-. nerend with parallelapproximately U-shaped flanges 3. The parallel approximately U- shaped flanges 3 are arranged on the interior of the band or cap and form between them a recess to receive an axle clip 4, whereby the sand band is attached to an axle. The axle clip may be secured in the recess between the flanges 3 and to the same by any suitable be readily applied to the sand band, and that V the latter may without the aid of a skilled mechanic be readily secured to an axle.

In order to facilitate the greasing of an axle the band or cap is provided with a central rectangular opening 7, and has a cover 8 hinged to it at one side of the opening and adapted to be swung back. The cover and the opening, which will be found advantageous may be omitted if desired.

Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

What I claim is A sand band comprising a band or cap provided at its inner end at its inner face with parallel transversely arranged approximately U-shaped flanges adapted to receive between them an axle clip, substantially as described.
