TRACE-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,488, dated December 12, 1893.

Be it known that I, THOMAS ROGERS, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Miles, in the county of Jackson, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace-Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in trace buckles; and is designed to provide a buckle which will admit of the trace and back band extending in a continuous straight line without being deflected at the point of crossing, and which will admit of the said buckle being easily adjusted to the required angle to suit the size of the horse, and which will permit of the trace being easily and quickly adjusted relative to the said back band, the trace and back band being securely held in the adjusted position.

The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts which will be herein-' after more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the buckle. Fig. 3 is an end view of the buckle as seen from a position at Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the buckle.

The trace buckle iscomposed of the frame A having a loop B on the rear end, and loops O and D on the top and bottom edges, respectively. The frame is strengthened by a cross bar a which is located about midway between the end bars and braces the top and bottom frame bars. The loop B is deflected outward from theplane of the frame A, and the loops 0 and D are deflected away from the plane of the said frame A in an opposite direction to the loop B. The end frame bar opposite the loop B is provided with a stud b which extends in the same direction as the loop B. A Stud 6 extends from the top frame bar in an opposite direction to the stud b and on the same side with the loops 0 and D. The rear endbar a is located a little to one side of the plane of the frame A to permit the trace E'to extend in a straight line.

For the sake of convenience that side of the frame A from which the stud b and the loop B extend will be designated as the outside, and that side from which the loops 0 and D and the stud e extend as the inside.

In applying the buckle to a harness the trace E will extend on the outside of the frame A and under the loop B and the rear end bar a and will be engaged with the stud b by means of which the position of the parts will be relatively fixed. The back band F will extend along on the inside of the frame A and pass through the loops 0 and D and will be engaged by the stud e which will hold the parts at the required elevation. The breeching strap G will be attached to the loop B in the usual manner.

By having the stud b at the forward end of the buckle frame and on the outside thereof, the buckle can be readily and quickly adj usted along the trace to the required position. And by having the stud e on the inside of the buckle and projecting from the top bar the buckle can be easily and quickly adjusted on the back hand strap to the required elevation.

It will be observed that the frame A and the several parts, B, O, D and the two studs 6 and b are integrally formed and constitute parts of a single casting, thereby obviating any loose or detachable parts which are liable to be lost.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein shown and described trace buckle composed of a frame having its circumscribing bars and a middle cross bar in the same plane, and having a rear loop B curved laterally to one side of the plane of the frame,

a stud b at the front end projecting from the same side of the frame as the loop B,a stude projecting from the upper end of'the said cross bar in an opposite direction to the loop B and stud b, and loops 0 and D, respectively, at the top and bottom edges of the frame and curving laterally to the plane thereof in an opposite direction to the loop B and stud h, the parts being integrally formed, substantially as set forth.
