EDWIN R. STILWELL, or DAYTON, omo, ASS IGNOR TO THE sTILwELL- BIEROE .tsMITavAILE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, on SAME PLACE.-
FEED-WATER-PU RI Fl ER ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,300, dated December 5, 1893.
Application filed August 31, 1891. Serial No. 404,267- (No model.) v
110 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. ST1LwELL,'a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Water-Purifier Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an attachment primarily adapted to be used in connection with a live steam purifier. These purifiers are commonly built horizontal, and the head has to be taken off frequently to remove the pans to clean them out. In practice these heads are' very large, and it is very difficult to take them off or put them on. My invention obviates this difficulty, and allows the heads to be easily swung around, suspended upon a crane which maintains them in the proper horizontal plane. It is made permanently attached to the purifier, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is an end elevation of a purifier with my improvement attached, a section of the purifier head being broken away. Fig.2, is a similar view showing the head of the purifier swung around in position for removing the pans.
1 represents the shell of the purifier, 2 the flange turned up at the end of the shell forming the base for attachment of the head.
3 represents a series of pans, which are supported upon ways 4 upon the inside of the shell.
5 represents a segmental bracket rigidly attached to the outer periphery of the shell near the head. It carries a socket 6 rigidly secured thereto, which forms a step or bearing supporting the curved crane shaft 7.
8 represents a hand wheel provided with a sleeve 9, whlch projects through and journals in the outer endof the crane shaft.
10 represents a hook with a screw-shank 11, which engages with threads tapped in the sleeve 9.
12 represents a socket rigidly secured to the head and screw-threaded to receive the threaded shank of the eye 13.
14 represents stud bolts screwed into the flange 2, the shanks of which are seen proj ecting from the face thereof.
15 represents bolt holes in the flange of the head.
16 represents nuts for securing the head of the flange so as to form a steam joint.
In practice these heads are very heavy and difficult to handle, but by means of the device herein shown and described the swinging device may be adjusted to hold the head A in an exactly horizontal position for removing the nuts 16, and afterward swung around out of the way exposing the pans so that they may be readily removed or inserted. This adjustment is accomplished in the following manner: The hand wheel is run back upon the threaded shank 8. Hook 10 is passed into the eye 13. The wheel is then run down until the sleeve ,9 of the wheel comes into bearing position on the shaft 7. The hand wheel is turned until the hook has a firm engagemenu taking. up all lost motion, when the crane may be swung around either to put the head in position on the shell, or to remove the same when it is desired to clean the pans. When the head is to be put onin building, it can be readily raised and lowered by the hand wheel so asto bring the bolt holes to exactly register with the stud bolts of the flange.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a purifier consisting of the shell 1, and removable pans 3, of the segmental bracket 5, secured to one side of said shell and supporting a socket 6, the swinging crane shaft 7 having its lower end journaled in said socket, the vertically adjustable shank 11, provided with hook 10, the hand-wheel 8 journaled in the upper end of the crane shaft and adapted to raise and lower the hook, and the removable head A, provided with eye 13, adapted to engage with the hook on the shank, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a purifier consist ing of the shell 1, and movable head A having an eye 13, of a curved crane shaft 7jour naled at its lower end to a support on the shell of the purifier, and the adjustable hook In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 10, tlllle shank of vfvhich is supported iii the my hand. over anging en 0 the crane-shaft,'said hook T 4 I being adapted to engage the eye on the mov EDWIL STILVELT' 5 able head whereby the latter may be raised i. Witnesses:
and lowered, substantially as and for the pu'r- BENJAMIN F. MCOANN, pose described. JOHN A. MAYER.
