CASSIUS M. MILLER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
DUPLEX STEAM-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION form-ing part of Letters Patent No. 510,184, dated December 5, 1893.
Application tiled February 27, 1893. Serial No. 463,817. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAssIUs M. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Duplex Steam-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin duplex steam engines, and consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l, of the accompanying drawings is a view in perspective of a duplex steam engine, illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section longitudinally through the steam cylinder A. Fig. 3, is a plan view of outline of the machine and a section horizontallythrough the steam chest showing the steam passages from the steam chest of one engine to the cylinder of the other. Fig. 4, is a vertical section transverse the steam chest; Fig. 5, a plan view of the under side or face of the steam valve.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawin s.
Iteferring to Fig. 1, A and B represent the steam cylinders which are cast integral, C a raised arched portion over and between the cylinders in which are located steam chests D and E, in which are provided vertical valve seats F and G, having in the former steam admission ports a, b, c, d, and exhaust port h', and in the latter steam admission ports, j, 7.2, Z, m, and exhaust port n, the ports a, o, c d, in valve seat F, registering with passages e,
4o f, g, h, that extend across through the dome C, to cylinder B, and the exhaust port h', connectingwith apassage leading t0 the exhaust pipe H, that passes down and out between the cylinders A and B. In the right hand Side of the dome C, are provided the steam chest E and valve seat G, si-milar to steam chest D, only differing in the location of the steam admission ports j, la, l, lm, which in this case are arranged about the upper portion of the valve seat as shown by the dotted lines, the exhaust port a at the top. These ports j, k, Z, m, connect with passages o, p, q,
r, kthat lead across from the steam chest G to the end of cylinder A.
Central to the valve seat is provided a recess s, in which is journaled a spindle t, projected from the face of the valve J, (see Fig. 1,)n about which the valve rotates. One side ot' the face of the valve J is grooved out on the under side as shown in Fig. 5, the back of the valve perforated to admit steam, the other side forming the cover for the steam admission ports and the exhaust port, as in the ordinary slide valve on the back of the valve are provided outwardly projected lugs u as shown.
To operate the valve J, a rock shaft K is provided having oppositely projecting arms c. One end of this shaft is passed through the valve into the projection s', the arms between the lugs u, the outer end journaled in a sleeve w, on the cap L of the steam chest.
On the outer end ot' the shaft K is secured a depending arm M that is connected to an arm N secured to and projecting from the piston rod O, by a connecting link P.
In operation steam is admitted through the aperture R into the dome C, 'thence to the steam chest G, on the right hand side of the dome and through the ports j, lo, and passages op to the front end of cylinder A, driving piston rearward. This movement will rock thev shaft K and rotate the valve J in steam chest F, to open the ports a, b, which will allow steamr to pass through the passages g h into the front end of cylinder B, by which the piston therein with the arm M, and its connections with the piston O, will be driven rearwardly, which movement will rotate the Yvalve in steam chest G, opening ports Z, m,
to allow steam to pass through the passages q r, to the rear end of cylinder A, to reverse the movement of the piston, which movement will rotate the valve in steam chest F to open the ports a b, to admit steam to dow through the passages e, into the rear end of cylinder B, to reverse the movements of the piston and valve J, to open ports j, lc, to permit steam to flow through the passages g, h, to the front end of cylinder A.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what-I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the cylinders A IOO and B, of the dome connection C, having therein steam chest D and E, vertical valve seats F and G, the former having ports a l), corresponding with passages e, f, leading through the dome C, to the rear end of cylinder B and ports c, d, and corresponding passages g, h, leading to the front end of cylinder B, and the latter having poi-tsj, 7n, that correspond With passages o p, that lead tothe front end of cylinder A, and ports Z m, and corresponding passages q r, leading to the rear end of cylinder A, and the rotary valves J, having a link connection with the piston rod O, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the cylinder A, B,
and connecting portion C, integral therewith, of the vertical valve seats F and G in the sides of the connecting portion C, steam passages e, and h, leading from Valve seat F to cylinder B, and steam passages p i', leading from Valve seat G to the end portions of cylinder A, rotary valves J and means for rotating said valves on the valve seats F, G, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of February, A. D.
