APPARATUS FOR COATING TIN AND TERNE PLATES.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. GRIFFITHS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residingin the city and'county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Coating Tin and Terne Plates, whichimprovement is fully set forth in the following specitication.
My invention consists of an apparatus for coating tin and terne plates having novel means for subjecting the plates to a bath of oil.
It also consists in providing the pot of the apparatuswith means for permitting the overflow of the excess of metal.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of an apparatus for coating tin and terne plates, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a pot adapted to hold molten metal for the formation of tin and terne plates.
Bdesignates feed rollers which are mounted within the pot A, and receive motion in any suitable manner.
Supported above the pot is a tank 0 which is provided with a discharge spout D, and a valve E therefor, the end of said spout being over the rollers B, the tank being adapted to contain oil to be applied to the coated plates.
In the side of the pot A is an overflow opening F, and to said pot inside of said opening is secured a guard G, which is closed at top and open at bottom, said bottom being below the feed rollers B, and below the level of the oil.
Connected with the pot outside of the opening F is a sliding plate H for adjusting the extent of discharge of material through said opening. The said plate is provided with the slots J through'which pass the bolts K into the wall of the pot A, thus retaining the plate in position, and adapting it to be raised and lowered, in orderto uncover more or less of the opening F, the effect of which is evident.
The pot A is also provided with a feed roller L, which may work with one of the adjacent rollers B for directing plates into said pot in order to coat the same, it being noticed here, that after a plate has been coated in the pot, it is directed upwardly between the rollers B, and thus removed from the pot. Mechanism for accomplishing said operations is well known, and forms no part of the present invention, but when the plate passes through the upper rollers B it requires to be oiled or subjected to a bath of oil. This is accomplished by the spout D, which receives oil from the tank 0, adjusted by the valve E, and discharges it upon said upper rollers and into the pot. Should the molten metal rise above the proper or set level, it overflows through the opening F, and may be collected and re-used, said opening being adjusted by slide H, as has been stated.
In some cases, the tank 0 may be employed 'to contain molten metal, the same discharging through the spout D and supplying the rollers B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is
1. An apparatus for coating tin and terne plates, consisting of a pot adapted to hold molten metal and having an overflow opening in its side, a perforated plate secured to said pot and regulating the size of said overflow opening, rollers in said pot, and an oil tank with a discharge spout emptying into said pot, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. An apparatus for coating tin, and terne plates,'consisting of a pot having an overflow opening in its side, with a guard for the same, a pert'orated sliding plate regulating the size of said opening, feed rollers in said pot, a tank with a discharge spout emptying between said rollers, and a valve controlling said discharge spout, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. In a coating apparatus, a pot provided with an overflow opening, an adjusting device therefor, and a guard on the inner side of said opening, substantially as described.
4. A coating apparatus having an oil tank, a coating pot with feeding rollers therein, a valve for the discharge 'spoutof said tank, and an adjustable overflow for said pot, the parts named being combined substantially as described.
