SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,025, dated December 5, 1893.

This invention has for its object to provideV a new and improved handle attachment for fiat irons, which is simple and economical in construction, and can be employed with any desired number of irons, according as each is desired for use.
To accomplish this object my invention consists in the features of construction and combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a flat iron provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view, taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views, showing modifications in the construction of the locking notch for retaining the tip end of the handle bar.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to lmake and use my invention,I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The numeral 1 indicates a iiat iron, which may be of any ordinary or suitable construction, and is provided on its upper side with a pair of standards 2 and 3, which are preferably cast integral with the body of the flat iron; although they may be made as separate pieces and suitably attached. The standard 3 is constructed with a vertical bore 4, termi-V nating at its lower or inner end in a iiat surface 5, in proximity to which is arranged a pin 6 which extends transversely through the standard in such manner as to slightly project into the bore 4. The handle rod or bar 7 is provided with a bend S and vertical limb 9, adapted to be'inserted into the bore 4 and to rotate axially therein. The vertical limb 9 is provided, near its lower end, with an annular groove 10,andwith a flattened portion 12 in such manner that by inserting the limb 9 into the bore 4 with the flattened surface 12 of the limb facing the pin 6, the annular groove 10 can be placed into coincidence with said pin, and then by swinging the handle bar 7 and thus rotating the limb 9, the flattened surface 12 will be moved out of coincidence With the pin 6, and the latter, by engaging the annular groove, will retain the limb 9 in the standard 3. The tip end or eX- tremity 13 of the handle-bar 7 can then be engaged with a retaining notch 14 formed in the upper end portion of the standard 2, for the purpose of securing the handle-rod or bar in position for manipulating the at iron. The handle-bar is inclined downwardly from the bend S to the tip end or extremity 13, and possesses sufficient elasticity that it can be slightly sprung upwardly when the tip end or extremity'is being engaged with the retaining notch 14. The handle-bar or rod is provided with a grip larg-composed of wood, or any other non-conducting, or other material suitable for the conditions required.
The retaining notch is preferably constructed as shown in Figs. l and 2, where a mouth or recess 15 is provided to enable the tip end or extremity 13 of the handle-rod or bar to pass into and out of engagement with the notch.
In the modification, Fig. 4, the mouth or recess is in the form of a transverse groove 16, arranged in that side of the standard 2 which faces the standard 3, and this transverse groove is open at each end, while the retaining notchv 17 is formed in the bottom wall of the groove.
In Fig. 5 the top surface of the standard is formed With a retaining notch 18, andthe entering mouth or recess is dispensed with.
In Fig. 6 the construction is the same as Vdescribed with reference to Fig. 4, except that the retaining notch 19 is formed in the top wall of a transverse groove 20.
-Where the mouth or recessleading to the retaining notch is formed by a groove, as in Figs. 4 and 6, the tip end or extremity 13 of the handle-rod or bar 7, can pass into and out of engagement with the retaining notch at either end of said groove. The handle-rod or bar can be readily detached by releasing the tip end or extremity 13 from the retaining notch and rotating the limb 9 runtil the attened face 12 is opposite or coincident lwith the pin 6, when the said limb can be lifted out of the bore 4 in the standard 8. The handle-bar can then be applied to another flat iron for the purpose of using the latter.
The pin 6 constitutes what may be termed a retaining shoulder, and obviously can be formed otherwise than by a transverse pin inserted through the standard.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a at iron, having a standard, provided with a vertical bore, and a retaining shoulder in the bore, of a handlebar, having a vertical member at one end portion, provided with a groove, and a flattened surface, and means for retaining the tip end 0r free extremity of the handle-rod or bar, substantially as described.
' 2. The combination with a dat iron, having a standard, provided with a retaining notch, and a standard, having a vertical bore, con taining a retaining shoulder, of a handle-rod or bar, having a vertical member, provided with a groove, and a flattened surface at or near its lower extremity, substantially as described.
The combination with a flat iron, having a standard, provided with a retaining notch, and a mouth or recess leading to said notch, and a standard, having a vertical bore, containing a retaining shoulder, of an elastic handle-rod or bar, having a vertical member, provided at or near its lower end portion with an annular groove, and a flattened surface, substantially as described.
