To all whom t may concern.-

Beit known that I, JOHN ALEXANDER l, FORBEsa citizen of the United States, residing at Dover, in the county of Kent and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Combined Sash Lift and Lock, of which the following is a' specification.

- This invention relates to a combined sash l lift and lock, and has for its object to provide a sash lift which will not interfere with -the use of window-screens, and that will also lock the. lower sash to the sillin a substantial and secure manner-so as to allow of the upper sash Y being left open whenthe lower sash is locked l fast.

- With these and other ends in view, thein-A fvention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be more fully described and claimed hereinafter.

In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective vview of a window sash and frame, showing v zee', Fig. 1, on a considerably enlarged scale.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan yview of the lock, showing the same in catching position in full lines and in releasing position in dotted lines, and the outer part or faceplatecarrying the lift detached. Fig. 4 is a front viewr of the lock, illustrating the catches in dotted lines and also the manner in which the same are operated upon by the sash lift.l Y

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings. v

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the lower rail of a sash, in which is embedded a box-casing 2, having a rectangular opening 3, at the central upper part of the back of the same and at the inner opposite sides, at or about the centers of the latter, screw-sockets 4 are located. At the center ofthe lower terminating side of the open ing 3, and located within the casing 2, is a space-block 5, of triangular form and having the apex thereof depending toward thebottom of said casing, and on opposite sides of the said space-bar are located the shanks 6 of a catch 7, that have engaging shoulders 8 at the lower ends thereof and areheld by the pivotposts or fulcrums 9, situated a short distance below the said space-bar. The'said pivotposts or fulcrurns 9 have their `outer ,ends split to receive the lower ends of springs 10, whose upper free ends bear against the outwardly-projecting ends 11 of the shanks 6. The said Shanks 6, below the space-block 5, touch each other, and above the said spaceblock the said shanks are spread apart and held ata predetermined distance from each other by striking against the opposite sides of the said space-block, in which position they are sustained normally by the action of the springs 10, that bear against the outer edges ofthe projecting ends l1. The engaging ends of the catches project through the lower end of the'casing 2 a sufficient distance Vandjare normally diverged, and are arranged to encent part of the' window-frame, and the upper ends of the Shanks of said catches are positioned on opposite sidesof the opening in the back of said casing 2. The said keeper l2 is formed with a suitable yslot 13, with which the engaging shoulders 8 are'arranged to lock and hold the windowsash'closed down, but which maybe released to raise the window-sash iu a manner which will now be fully set forth.

Over the front of the casing 2 is secured a face-plate o'r escutcheon 14, havinga rectangular slot extending vertically and lon gitudinally thereof, as at l5, in which vis pivotally mounted a combined sash-lift and lock-operating device consisting of an elongated bar 16, having trunnions 17 on opposite sides thereof that are mounted in suitable bearings fixed against the inner surface of the said face-plate. The lower end. of said bar 16, on the inner surface thereof, is formed with a curved depression 18, and a widened nose or lower end `19, whereby a convenient fingergage a keeper 12, secured to the sill or adjagrip is provided; and the opposite end of the formed as just set forth.
