Be it known thatl, LUDWIG FRIEDRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and e useful Improvements in Glassware-Threading Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in glass-ware threading devices.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a plan View of my device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the center ofthe device. Fig. 3 is an end view. o
Referring to the drawings, A is an inside vchaser having a conical point a, and a screwthreaded portion a', the rear portion of the chaser being tubular and provided with a reduced portion a2 threaded, as shown, for a purpose hereinafter described. In the tubular portion of the inside chaser is inserted a spiral spring B, and within the spring is placed the reduced end o of a spindle C having a collar o provided on its under face with notches c2. Over the spindle is slipped a tube D having a socket d in which the collar c is received, the interior of the socket being threaded atd for engagement with the thread-l ed reduced portion a2 above described, the socket being provided, also, with teeth cl2 for engagement with the notches c2 of the collar c. To the spindle C is fixed by threading or otherwise a pair of spring-handled formers E having jaws e adapted to force the glass into the threads ct of the chaser A.
A guide F is placed near the front end of the device and consists of a central ring f in which the tubular portion of the inside chaser A is inserted loosely, Vthe ring having at opposite sides the guide rods f which pass loosely through holes in the spring handles at e. The operation of my device is as follows: Supposing it is desired to thread the neck of a bottle, the bottle is first blown and then must be headed and placed in my device, by inserting the coned-point a of the inside chaser into the neck ofthe bottle forcing it open until the entire screw-threaded portion a is within the neck of the bottle. By pressing together the spring-handles and at the same time rolling the bottle in a snap the jaws force the glass into the threads of the inside chaser, and, the spring-handles and the spindle are moved forward thereby disengaging the notches c2, which permit the rotation of the inside chaser independent of the spring handles which are held stationary by the operator, the jaws being pressed in contact with the neck of the bottle. After the neck is finished the spring-handles are released whereupon they spread apart and the spiral spring B is permitted to force the spindle and handles back, the notches c2 again engaging the teeth d2 and locking the spindle and handles to the inside chaser, which may then be removed from the inside of the neck of the bottle, by turning the handles and spindle so as to unscrew the chaser threads from the neck threads of the bottle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device for threading glassware, the combination with an inside ,chaser, of a spindle slidingly mounted relatively to said chaser and provided with a retracting spring, a locking device whereby said spindle and chaser are normally held against independent rotation, spring handles fixed at their rear ends to said spindle and provided with jaws adapted to press the neck of the article to be threaded against the chaser, and means for unlocking the said chaser from the spindle when the latter is moved forward, whereby said chaser is permitted to rotate independently of the spindle, substantially as described.
2. In a device for threading glass, a spindle provided with a collar having notches, an inside chaser revoluble on the spindle, a tube also revoluble on the spindle and attached to the inside chaser, said tube having teeth arranged to engage the notches in the collar, a spring device between the collar and inside chaser, and a pair of spring handles fixed to IOO the spindle and provided with jaws arranged to force the glass against the chaser,substan tially as described.
3. In a device for threadingv glass, a spindle having a reduced portion and a collar below the reduced portion and provided with notches in its rear face, an linside Chaser having a coned point, a screw-thread, a rear tubular portion, and a reduced portion provided with a screw-thread, the reduced portion of the spindle being inserted in the tubular rear portion of the inside chaser, a spiral spring surrounding the reduced portion of the spindle and bearing against the front of the collar and against the inside rear face of the Chaser, a tube loose on the main portion of the spindle and provided with a socket which passes over LUDWIG FRIEDRICH.
