UNITED STATES" WILLIAM WEBER AND GEORGE WEBER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PATENT O FICE.
SPEAKING ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONES.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 509,061, dated November 21, 1893.
Application filed September 16, 1 893 Serial No. 485,694. (No model.) I
To all whom it'maly concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM WEBER and GEORGE WEBER, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement: in Speaking Attachments for Telephones, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an auxiliary attachment to the transmitter box of a telephone.
To get the best results from a telephone transmitter, the voice, or sound waves of the speaker should be projected on the transmitter-diaphragm direct, without regard to the corresponding heights of the speaker, and the transmitter-diaphragm; for that reason we connect the transmitter box and mouth piece by a flexible tube, and the telephone may be used bya personstanding or sitting, and the speaker is not obliged to face the telephone transmitter box; and our invention consists -in a flexible transmitting tube, one end being rigidly connected to the transmitter box, the other end having a mouth piece, so connected to the receiving phone, that, thatend of the tube and phone may be held by one hand, the phone at one ear, the mouth piece in front of the mouth of the speaker: We attain these objects by the construction and combination of a flexible transmitter 'tube, and a receiving phone as is illustrated in the accompany- The tube D, we prefer to make of a coil of spring wire, three-fourths of an inch in diameter and thirty inches long, more or less; this wire tube, we first cover with a thin rubber tube, and an outer cover of woven, or platted worsted yarn. The mouth piece E, is stamped or spun from sheet metal. The clamp F, may be cast of brass. The connection H, is made of a small metal pipe. The spring clamp G, is out and stamped from sheet metal. I
The metal parts we nickel plate and polish.
Our improvement is connected to the telephone in the following manner:-The head of the receiving phone is inserted in the clamp F, and made tight by the screw 0., and the tubeD fixed to the box B, by the springclamp G. The receiving phone is then hung as usual on the switch lever; and the tube is ready for use.
When a call is made, the receiving phone is removed fl'oln'theswitch lever, and placed to one ear. That brings the mouth piece directly in front of the speaker, and sound waves of the speaker will be projected directly on the transmitter plate, Without regard to the facing, or position of the speaker. v I
Having as above fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V A speaking attachmentfor telephones, consisting of the combination of a flexible tube having one end secured over the transmitter, and a'n'iouth piece at-the other end rigidly connected to a receiving phone; so that by placing the receiving phone to one ear, and there holding it by the hand, the mouth piece of the tube will be placed and held in front of the mouth of the speaker; as shown and described. f'
