To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
manager, of Lahr Railway Station, Baden, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful-Permutation Lock, of' which the known as combination or letter-locks and which oi'ers still greater difficulties than heretofore to unauthorized persons in unlocking it, as not only the usual wordor number is` required to be known but also an extra Secre device has to be operated.
In the accompanying drawings the interior mechanism of the lock is clearly illustrated. Figure 1 is a vertical section through the center line of the lock. Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the parts in the position they would occupy when the lock is unlocked. Fig. 3, is a top view of the number disks. Fig. 4 is a top view of the coupling disks. Fig. 5 shows the middle plate. Fig. 6 shows the bed plate. Fig. 7 is a side view of the lower couplingpart. Fig. 8, shows in vertical section the mechanism for securing the lock in its open position and in a state of rest, and Fig. 9 is a vertical section of the same mechanism in action. f The essential features of the n ew safety lock for which the present application is made consist in three main parts, a bed-plate,` A, a middle plate B for setting the letter disks and a cover plate C for thev reception of the letter disks. The last named plate C carries, as shown in the drawings, four shanks c with button-heads b andthe letter or numbered disks c in suitable recesses. The plate itself is provided with marks d, Fig. 3, for setting the numbers or letters required for unlocking the lock. Each' shank a carries at its lower spondin g holes t' of the shanks a. Screws e are passed through the plate Afor the purpose of regulating the lift of the plates B and C. The screw t serves also, after having lifted the plates B and C away from the plate A, to separate the plates B and C from each other vby giving it several turns, which is now possible,`as after having lifted the plates B and C up, the square part/w of the screwt is retired from the square opening o in the fixed plateA v and enters into the larger hole win the bed plate A. By separating the plates B and C from each other, the pins o of the disks g are brought out of contact with the toothed disks e, so as to allow of altering the numbered disks to another letter or number.A To prevent the plates B and C from approaching the plateAby accident during the operation, the upper plate C is provided on its inner side with a bell crank lever w which is lodged' in a recess in the plate B, Fig. 9,` and is kept in its normal position by a spring y, so that the free arm of it is made to enter the hole j in the plate A, but, by twisting the screw, will bear on the plate A. y y
