HoRsEsHoE-CALK SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,903, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed April 6, 1893. Serial No. 469,287. (N o model.)
Toa/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LFRANK F. GOKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winooski, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-Calk Sharpeners; and I do herebyk declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the n Same.
My invention relates to an improvement in calk Sharpeners, and it consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully de- 4scribed and especially referred to in the claims.
The object of my invenion is to provide an improved machine for sharpening horse shoe upon feet A', and having at its'upper .end
the integral, horizontal bearing- B, in which is mounted shaft C, upon the respective ends of which are secured the drive wheel D and fly wheel E. The wheel D is grooved upon its periphery, asshown, to accommodate the driving belt F which actuates the grinding mechanism. Mounted upon the shaft C between bearing B and wheel. D, is the sleeve G having upon its upper side the tubular extension H, in which is secured the longitudinally adjustable bar I. The sleeve Gis loose on shaft C s0 that the plane of bar I may be varied at will. The extended rear end of the said bar, however, is connected to arm J, projecting from standard A by the coiled spring K, which serves to hold the bar normally in a horizontal position. This spring will yield readily to downward pressure upon y, the forwardy end ofthe bar, so that the adjustment of the same is not materially impeded. f
Vris a stop projecting from standard A to engage the rear end of bar Land thus prevent its forward end from being raised above a horizontal position by the action of spring K. S-wiveled to the forward end of bar I, is the fork L having journaled betweenrits prongs the' shaft M, upon which is mounted the respective large and small peripherally grooved Wheels N and O.. The latter takes the belt F, as shown. Adapted to swing upon the shaft M is the angular frame P, having upon its outer end the bearing surface P upon which is concentrically pivoted the correspondingly formed surface Q', of forked frame Q, which latter has mounted between its forks the elnery wheel R upon the shaft S. Upon this shaft is the grooved wheel T, which takes the belt U, whereby power is transmitted thereto from large Wheel N. An operating handle Z is projected from the frame-Ql for the purpose of adjusting the wheel to the calk being operated upon, and for holding the same in the said position while grinding.
By means of the swivel at the inner end of fork L, and also the swivel connection between the frame P and Q, I am enabled to so turn and adjust the eniery wheel for operation in any position which the calk will occupy, and I am also enabled by this construction to reach every portion of the calk which it is desired to sharpen'.
The machine may be very readily operated at wheel D, by one man while the grinding mechanism quickly effects the sharpening operation in the hands of another man without the necessity of removing the shoesfroin the animals feet.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--..
1. An improved calk Sharpener comprising a support, a shaft journaled in its upper end, a sleeve loose on the shaft, a tubular extension on said sleeve extending at right angles to the sleeve cavity, a bar confined in said tubular extension, and a grinding mechanism carried by the bar, substantially as shown and described. v
2. An improved calk Sharpener comprising IOC a support, a shaft journaled therein, a sleeve In testimonywhei'eof I do affix my signature loose on the shaft', a tubular extension on in presence of two Witnesses. said sleeve and at light angles thereto, a bai adjustable longitudinally through said ex- FRANK F' GOKEY" 5 tension, and a grinding mechanism carried Witnesses:
by said bar, substantially as shown and de- WILLIAM R. CHAMBERS,
