' *NITED STATES GEORGE .W. SAVAGE,
OF NORWALK, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR SHARPENING CALKS.
QPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,811, dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed February 9, 1887. Serial No. 227,052. (No model.)
ToaZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SAVAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at N orwal k, in the county of Huron and State of Ohlo, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Sharpening Oalks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a machine whereby the calks of horseshoes, either those of the toe or heel, may be sharpened without removing the v same from the animal.
In cities, where horseshoe calks lnustbe kept constantly sharp during the winter, it is the custom, when much sharpening becomes necessary, to remove the shoe, heat it, and forge the calks sharp. My invention saves all the trouble of removing the shoe, and very much lessens the labor of sharpening the calks.
This invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims thereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of the machine. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the bearing-block of the grinding-wheel rod or shaft.
Referring to the drawings byletter, A designates the main frame of the machine resting upon three legs, as shown. In the upper vertical part,'a, of the main frame is journaled a large gear-wheel, B, provided on its outer side with a crank-handle, b, by means of which it is rotated. The said wheel meshes with a pinion, O, on the outwardly-extended end of a horizontal shaft, (.7, journaled in the main frame below the gear-wheel, and carrying at a proper point upon it a flyfwheel, D.
E is a shaft, jointed at e to the end of the shaft 0 opposite that upon which is the pinion C. The said joint 6 allows the shaft E to incline up and down while rotating with the shaft 0.
F is a bracket secured to the main frame, and having in its .outer vertical'bar, f, a slot, f, made on the arc of a circle, of whichthe joint e is in the center.
and having in one side, extended out of the slot, arsuitable bearing, 9, for the shaft E.
g is a set-screw, by means of which the block can be fixed in any desired position in the slot.
Upon the outer end of the shaft E is secured the small emery or other grinding wheel.
The machine is light and can be easily carried about, and when in operation is set up near the horse, the foot of which is raised to bring the grinding-wheel to bear on the calks, the shaft of the wheel being raised or lowered by the described means, when necessary.
Having described my invention, I claim-.-
1. In a machine for grinding horseshoecalks, the combination of the horizontally-arranged driving-shaft a, the universal joint 6, secured to the outer end of the shaft 0, the grindingwheel shaft E, secured at one end to the universal joint 6, the slotted frame F, and the block G, mounted in the slot of the frame F, and through which the shaft E passes and is supported in its adjustment, substantially as described.
2.,In a machine to grind horseshoe-calks, the combination, with the main frame, of the large geanwheel having a crank-handle, the pinion meshing with said wheel, the horizontal shaft journaled in the main frame and caring-wheel, the grinding-wheel shaft jointed to the horizontal shaft, so as to turn up and down thereon while rotating therewith, the bracket having a slot made on the arc of a circle, of which the joint of the shaft is the center, and the bearing-block adjustable in said slot, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as presence of two witnesses. g
