IRON OR STEEL PILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,881, dated November 14, 1893.
Application led June 1'7, 1893.
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HoovEN, of Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iron or Steel Piles, of which the following is a speciication. y
My invention is an improvement in the piling of iron whereby scrap iron and steel may be brought into proper convenient form to be placed in the furnace and heated prior to being subjected to the rolls or other manipulating devices, and consists in the novel method and constructions hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of a pile embodying my invention. Fig. 3 shows short end sections.
The improved method consists in telescoping a series of tubes or tubular sections to- 'gether and locking the same to each other at their end or ends.
In the constructions shown in Figs. l and 2 the pile is composed of a series of pipes or tubular sections A of varying sizes fitted together by telescoping them in each other until a composite pile is formed of the desired weight the tubesor' sections being cut the length desired and in practice I select the pipe sections of such sizes as to secure a comparative fit and the sections are locked together at theiizend or'ends by theV keys B driven between them and locking each of the sections to the adjacent section or sections. These keys maybe slivers of metal, specially prepared keys, or may be ordinary nails driven in so tightly between the adjacent sections as to lock them securely together at their end or ends.

. that they are closely Iitted together, as in practice I take the waste tubing as it happens to come and telescope the sections thereof loosely together leaving a space between each adjacent section which is useful for several reasons among which may be stated it aords passages between the tubes so thatlieat may readilyget to the interior of the pile and hasten the proper heating thereof, and also such spaces form seats for-the fastening keys which may be readily driven therein to secure the sections of the pile rigidly together.
While it is preferred to use the sections of an even length 'it is obyi'ous that if desired I may use as substitutes for the pipe sections shorter sections or bent circles vor parts of circles locked together and having the space between them suitably illed with scraps or otherwise as will be understood from Fig. 3.- In
this as in the other construction it will be seen that the pile includes a number of approximately concentric sections iitted together and locked to each other at their ends.
Manifestly the number,.length and size of the pipe sections used may be varied to agree with the length and weight of pile it is desired to provide. l
