UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN SICHELSCHMIDT, OF DORTMUND, GERMANY.
AXLE-BEARING FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,775, dated November 14, 1893. Application iiled January 26, 1893. Serial No. 459.876- (No model.)
Zo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN SICHEL- SCHMIDT, of l Konigswall, Dortmund, in the Kingdom ofjPrussia and German Empire, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Axle-Bearings for Vehicles, of which the following is -a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to the axle bearings and under framing of contractors, colliery and other similar railway wagons and its objects are to provide means for the automatic adjustment of the bearings in work, to enable the under frame to be mounted in a simple and easy manner, and' to insure the constant supply of clean lubricant.
I will describe my said invention-with reference to the accompanying drawings in each of the figures of which similar parts are denoted by similar letters of reference. Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, of the two wheels of one side of a wagon, viewed from between the rails. Fig. 2is an end elevation of oney of the wheels of part of the axle, and a vertical section of the axle-box and bearing. Fig. 3 is a plan, partly in section, of Fig. l. Fig. 4t shows three views of the bearing, in front and side elevation, and in plan respectively.
The main part of the frame A, is cast in one piece, with the axle boxes G G and with the cavity E, to contain the lubricant. The axle boxes as shown by Figs. l and 2, consist of hollow vertical cylinders open at the top and closed at the bottom by a hemisphere of the same strength as the cylindrical part. On each side of the axle box there is an open tubular part C, forl the passage of the axle,
and having such an internal diameter as to allow a little play for the axle horizontally and vertically. The brass or bearing D, for each wheel, is contained within the upper cylindrical part of the axle-box, is cylindrical in horizontal cross section, and is provided at the top with a central circular recess H. The
lubricant chamber E, communicates by a comparatively broad channel N, with the, bearings D, in each of which Ythere is an oil hole communicating'with the recess H with which there also communicates, through the side of the bearing, a continuation of the channelN,
as shown by Fig. 1. A strong lubricating wick N is laid in the channel N, from the chamber E to each ofthe two recesses H, in the bearings D, and conducts the lubricant from the chamber to the working faces of the jou rnal and bearing. The upper plate B, of the framing, has on its inner side, two cylindrical projections F, which lit respectively within the recesses H in the upper faces of the brasses D. The frame A having been arranged in place, and the brasses placed above the axles, the top plate B is placed above 1t and the two are.then firmly screwed, or fastened together. The engagement of the cylindrical parts F, with the recesses H, inthe brasses, permits to the latter sufficient rotary motion around a vertical axis but the distance of the plates apart being fixed by the body of the wagon to which they are secured, no longitudinal motion of the bearings on the axles can occur. The wheel R, with the exception of the cap K, is pressed from a single piece of iron or steel, and the cap K is afterward welded on.
The wheels may be secured upon their axles by split pins S,for by" other suitable means. p
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
l. The combination vwith the frame A formed at its ends with axle-boxes provided with openings t'or the reception of axles, of bearings within said axle-boxes each provided with a recess II, and a frame B having a projection F to engage each of said recesses, substantially as described. y
2. The combination of the lower frame plate A having axle-boxes G and lubricant chamber
