CONNECTOR FOR ELECTRO-MA GNET COILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,643, dated November 14, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN O. SOUTHWORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connectors for Electro- Magnet Coils, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dynamo electric machinery, and it consists in an improved connector for the terminals of the coils of electro magnets, especially the field magnet coils of dynamos and motors. In moving these coils about the shop, and in transporting the machines, the projecting connectors are liable to be broken ofi.
The object of my invention is to prevent damage to the connectors by making them more or less yielding. The connector is composed of a laminated copper strip bent into an eye around a rigid metal bushing and protected by an outer layer of heavier metal, such as iron. The end of the flexible strip is connected with the end of the coil, the strip being secured upon the outside of the coil by a wrapping of cord or the like.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a dynamo electric machine, provided with my improved connectors. Fig. 2 is a section of a portion of one of the field magnets and connectors. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, and Figxlis an enlarged end view of a connector.
At each end of the wire A, constituting the winding of the coil, are two or three turns of heavy wire A, to which are soldered the ends of a laminated copper strip B, doubled at its middle around a rigid bushing O of metal. The laminations are left free to move upon each other, so that the strip has great flexibility. The strip is led along outside of the winding a suitable distance, being separated therefrom by insulation D. The middle eye portion 1) is then bent outwardly and inclosed in a stifi sheathing of iron E, the ends e of which are spread out flat on the winding. Over these ends is laid a piece of cardboard F, and a wrapping of cord G is then wound over the ends 6, the cardboard and the body of the strip B, suitable insulation D being interposed between the strip and the wrapping. A set screw H is inserted into the side of the eye I) to hold the conductor I by which the coil is connected with the desired circuit. This construction gives great strength and durability, but is free to yield to blows or strains and thus reduce the liability to breakage. It is evident, however, that it may be considerably varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In some cases it may be possible to dispense with the bushing, or the sheathing, or the cardboard, or any or all of them.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Aconnectorforelectro magnetcoi1s,composed of a strip of metal doubled together and formed into an 'eye, substantially as described.
2. A connector for electro magnet coils, composed of a strip of metal doubled together around a rigid bushing, substantially as described.
3. The combination with an electro magnet, of a laminated strip of metal connected with the end of the winding, substantially as do scribed.
4.. The combination with an electro magnet, of a laminated strip of metal having its ends connected with the end of the winding, and its middle portion formed into an eye to receive a conductor, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with an electro magnet, of a flexible strip of metal connected with the end of its winding and secured to the magnet by a wrapping of cord, substantially as described.
6. A connector for electro magnet coils, composed of a rigid bushing and a laminated strip of metal doubled around said bushing, substantially as set forth. 9o
7. A connector for electro magnet coils composed of a rigid bushing, a laminated strip of metal doubled around said bushing, and a sheathing of stiff metal covering the eye thus formed, substantially as described.
