WEATHER-STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,504, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed May 22, 1893. Serial No. 475,017. (No model.) v
To all whom it may concern: and their outer ends free and engaging the Be it known that I, RICHARD H. CUTLER, a upper portions of the angle plates. 'Thisconcitizen of the United States, residing at Lanstruction forms asufficient hinge connection caster, in the county of Keokuk and State to enable the Weatherstrip lto swing upward 5- of Iowa, have invented a new and useful when the door is open.
Weather-Strip, of which the following is a The weather strip is forced upward against specification. 5 the action of the springs and maintained in The invention relates to improvements in that position to carry it clear of any obstruc- Weather p tions by a bell-crank lever 7 disposed hori- 6o [0 The object of the present invention is to zontally at the bottom of the door and having improve the construction of hinged weather one arm extending beneath the door, which strips, and to provide an effici-ent one which is provided with a recess 8, and its other arm will be held elevated above the sill and out arranged to engage the adjacent door jamb, of contact with the floor-when the door to when the door isclosed,to disengageits other I5 which it is applied is opened, and which will arm from the weather strip to permit the latbe automatically dropped upon the sill when ter to fall upon the sill. The bell-crank lever the door is closed. is provided at its angle with a vertical pivot The invention consists in the construction 9; and its door jamb engaging arm is proand novel combination and arrangement of vided with a vertical spindle extension, on 20 parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated which is journaled a roller 10 to enable it to in the accompanying drawings and pointed engage the doorjainb without friction. When out in the claims hereto appended. the door is being opened the roller of the In the drawings-Figure lisa perspective bell-crank lever engages an angularly disview of a weather strip constructed in acposed guide 12, which is secured to the door 25 cordance with this invention and shown apframe, whereby the roller 10 is held to roll plied to a door, the latter being partially open against the jamb, and the bell-crank lever is to show the weather strip elevated. The combination with a door and its and have their inner ends secured thereto, frame, of a weather strip hingedly connected with the door, and a bell-crank lever pivoted on the door in a plane at right angles to the hinging of the strip and arranged beneath the weather strip and having one armto engage the same for supporting the weather strip in an elevated position, and having its other arm extended outward to engage the door frameto disengage thelever from the weather strip, and a guide arranged to engage the bell-cranklever while the door is being opened, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a door and its frame, of a weather strip hingedly connected thereto, a bell-crank lever pivoted on the door in a plane at right angles to the hinging of the strip and arranged beneath the weatherstrip and extending upward therefrom and provided with perforations receiving the pins and arranged between the sprlngs and the door and engaged by the former, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a door provided with sockets, and a door frame, of a weather strip, springsdisposed horizontallyon the door and secured at their inner ends thereto and provided at their outer ends with inwardly extending pins located in the sockets, angle plates secured to the weather strip and extending upward therefrom and provided with perforations and arranged on the pins between the springs and the door, a bell-crank lever arranged beneath the weather strip and provided with a pivot and fulcrumed on the door and having one arm for engaging the weather strip and provided at the outer end of its other arm with a vertical spindle, a roller journaled on the spindle, and a guide extendingoutv rard from thedoor frame at an angle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
