haust gas of a gas engine may be utilized to produce the vapor necessary to run the pistons of a vapor engine the said exhaust gas being used either directly from the gas engine or after having passed-through the heating jacket of the vapor engine.
It is my object further to secure an advantageous co-operation between the Vapor generator of the apparatus and the gas engine by utilizingthe volatile liquid of the generator to keep the jacket'of the gas engine cool, the heat of the jacket'produced by the frequent explosions reacting on the volatile liquid and tending to vaporize the same before it is returned to the generator.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of my apparatus partly in section, and Fig. 2, is a plan of the left hand portion of the apparatus partly in section and Fig.v 2" is a plan view of the right hand portion shown in Fig. 1, this being also partly iin section.
The gas motor A discharges its spent gas through the pipe B, either to the vapor motor by the pipe a, or tothe vapor generator by the pipe C and this is done by the means of This cock is intended to regulate the passage of the gas through d and C and at the same time to prevent the gas passing through either of the pipes if desired. G into the generator through the chamber I to give up the rest of its caloric in order to produce the vapor from the ether which is contained in the chamber I of the generator, through which chamber thepipes A pass for the circulationV of gas which finally passes from the generator through the pipe J.
When the gas overheats the jacket D, it is cut off therefrom and sent directly to the generatoi/l through the pipe C the cock c being turned for this purpose and by doing so heat is furnished the generator directly for the vaporization of ether. The liquid ether which is contained in the lower part of the generator circulates through pipe K to the casing of cylinder L of the gas motor in order to cool off the walls of said cylinder by its contact With the same, While taking the heat up itself in order to produce the vapor of ether. Consequently the liquid ether circulates around the cylinder L takes the heat up therefrom and returns to the vapoll generator through the pipe M in the form of vapor or highly heated liquid.
The ether vapor afterv having produced its eect in E and F escapes by N and into a suitable condenser; from there the liquid is taken back to the generator by a pump O to be used again.
Reference is made to my case tiled December 19, 1892, Serial No. 455,668, as showing some of the features included herein.
1. In combination the gas engine, the vapor motor comprising a cylinder and piston, the vapor jacket about the same, the generator, the exhaust pipe from the gas engineleading to the vapor jacket andgthence to the generator, the second exhaust pipe leading directly to the generator and the valve for controlling the said exhaust pipes, substantially as described.
2. In combination the gas engine, the vapor motor comprising a cylinder` and piston, with the vapor jacket the vapor generator, the pipe K leadingfrom the lowerpart of the generator to the gas engine jacket to convey the cool volatile liquid thereto the return pipe M leading from the gas engine jacket to the generator, the direct connecting pipe from the exhaust of the gas engine to the generator Vthe indirect connection leading from said exhaust vto the generator through the vapor jacket of the vapor motor to the generator and the valve for controlling said exhaust connections, substantially as described.
