ANDREW J. JOHNSON, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
BABY-J u M PER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,423, dated November 14, 1893.
I Application filed November 26, 1892. Serial No. 463,230- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. JOHNSON, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cradles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked'thereon, which form a part of this specification. Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of the cradle. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of cradle with suspension attachment. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the hook. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the spring.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in cradles, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the cradle body, which maybe of any suitable construction. Affixed in a rigid manner to the head piece A at the central portion thereof, is a supporting arm or standard B, which extends upwardly and forwardly, and terminates about centrally over the cradle body, in a horizontal portion a, and serves to suspend the cradle above the floor. Arranged to slide backwardly and forwardly upon this horizontal portion is a clasp C, the forward end of which has an upward, hooked projection D, by means of which it is connected to a loop I) on the lower end of a spiral spring E, the upper end of which is secured in a similar manner to a hook F, which engages a suitable overhead support. To secure the desired adjustment of the clasp O, a
set screw 0 is provided, and the purpose of the adjustment is to provide means for changing the gravity or balance of the cradle, as the child grows in weight and length, or to adapt it to infants of diiferent sizes and weights.
The spring E consists of a tightly wound hollow coil, having in its lower enda threaded plug c, which carries the loop b. In the upper end of the coil is threaded a plug K, having a projecting neck portion k, and formed with a central vertical perforation k. Lisa rod, havingupon its upper end the hook F, said rod passing through the plug K, into the coil. By extending this rod a greater or less distance from the coil, the cradle may be adj usted to any height, or adapted to rooms of different heights. The adj ustment'is secured by means of a small set screw Z working in the neck portion is.
The hook F is of broad form, as shown, in order to prevent any tendency on the part of the cradle to sway backward and forward, or laterally, and to limit its movement to an up and down motion on thespring.
For the purpose of guarding against the infant falling out of the cradle, either through its own efforts, or by reason of the motion imparted thereto, a guard G is provided. Said guard consists of a suitable piece of fabric secured at one end to the foot of the cradle, and formed with loops at its lateral edges, which run loosely on cords or tape g, g. Tothe head end of the guard are secured tapes or cords h, h, which extend through apertures in the head piece A.- When the infant is to be placed in the cradle, the guard is drawn toward the foot, and is subsequently drawn up, and the tapes h, h, secured in the manner shown in Fig. 2. This arrangement not only serves as a'guard, but also takes the place of a quilt or spread.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s 1 1. The combination with a suspended cradle body, of a combined guard and spread therefor, said guard or spread comprising a piece of fabric secured at one end to the footpiece of the cradle body, and having loops at its longitudinal edges, tapes or cords g, g, on
which said loops loosely run, and the tapes or cords h, h, secured to the head end of said guard and spread, and extending through apertures in the head piece to the rear of which they are adapted to be secured, substantially as specified. Y
2. The combination with a cradle body,hav-
ing the arm B, and the hooked clasp in adjustable engagement with the upper portion of said arm, of the spring E, by means of which said cradle is suspended, said spring comprising a hollow coil,a plug threaded into one end of said coil, a rod passing loosely through said plug and into'said coil a setscrew for securing the rod, and a plug in the opposite end of said coil, said plug having an eye or staple which engages the hook of said clasp, substantially as specified.
3. The suspension spring E, comprising a hollow coil, a plug threaded into one end of said coil, an aperture through said plug, a rod passing through said aperture partially with- 10 in said coil, a hook on the outer end of said rod, and a set screw in said plug for securing the adjustment of said rod, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW J. JOHNSON.
