7 SULKY.
SPECIIEIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,415, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed March 30,1893. Seriallo. 468,405. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. GALBRAITH, a citizen of the United States, 'residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulkies; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention 'relates to new and useful improvements in sulkies, and consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, the essential features of which being pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to construct a light and strong sulky adaptable to the use of wheels having pneumatic tires, and in which the construction is such that the employment of an axle for connecting the wheels is obvivated, enabling the sulky to be hitched more closely to the horse, and in which provision is made for adjusting the vehicle for horses of various sizes, all of which is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improved sulky. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on dotted line 4at of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 isa vertical section on dotted line 55 of Fig. 3.
Referring to theletters of reference, A designates the thills, which are bent downward and rearward near their rear ends, forming the parallel end portions A that extend horizontally rearward, in a plane much lower than the forward ends thereof.
B and B are parallel trussed bows or arches that constitute the frame which supports the seats C, and which span between the rear end port-ions A of the thills, upon Which the ends of said trusses rest, and to which they are firmly secured, as shown at a. The rear truss B is somewhat the higher of the two, so as to give the proper pitch to the seat.
D designates the circle-bar, whose ends extend onto and are secured to the raised portions of the thills, the rearwardlycurved portion of said bar being supported by the di' verging brace-rods b, which are attached to the rear truss B and extend obliquely for ward to said bar. Mounted on the circle bar, is the whiffletree E, which is pivoted to said bar by means of the bolt c, the upper end of which is stayed bygthe short braco d, extending rearwardly from the truss B. Attached to the inner face of the circle bar and extendend of the spindle 72 of the vehicle wheel as shown in Figs.. 2 and 5.
f indicates similar brace-rods that depend from said brackets, approximately parallel to the bracesf, and that are attached at their lower ends to an inclined plate 7L having slots in its lower edge adapted to receive the inner end of the spindle t' of the wheel. Said wheel is mounted on the spindle between the braces f,f, the bearing cones 0 on said spindle being embraced by said platos h h, and the Wheel is secured in the frame by clampi1ig said plates between said cones and the nuts d on the ends of said spindle, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. This manner of securingthe spindle in the slots in the inclined edges of the platos h, h, enables the seat supporting frame to be 'adjusted forward or backward to balance the weight of the driver, as desired, and the thills raised or lowered, according to the -height of the horse, by simply loosening the nuts o and moving the spindle forward or backward as required,
Extending from the under face of the rear ends of the thills, are the inclined braces m, which are attached to the inner plates h, and braco the wheel frame laterally.
Attached to the outer face of the thills, and curving rearwardly around the wheels, to the curved bar H that connects the rear ends of the thills, are the guard braces I, that serve to braco the thills and the wheel frame, and
IOO
form a guard which preveuts the looking of the wheels with another vehicle.
Having thus fully set f0rth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sulky, the combination of the thills, the arched trusses connecting said thills, the wheel frames depending from said trusses, and the wheels adjustably mounted therein.
2. In a sulky, the combination with the sulky frame, of the wheel frame, having' opposed plates provided with a series of registering slots, the wheel, the spindle of said wheel adapted to be received in the slots of said plates.
3. In a sulky, the combination with the sulky frame, of the wheel frame provided with parallel inclined plates having corresponding slots in their under edges, the wheel, the spindle of said wheel adapted to be removably secured in the slots of said platos.
4. In a sulky, the combination of the thills, the trussed arches connecting said thills, the brackets extending horizontally from said trusses, the convergng brace-rods depending from said brackets, and the wheels journaled at the lower ends of said rods.
5. In a sulky, the combination of the thills, the arch connecting said thills, the wheel frames attached to said arch, the curved guard and braco attached to the thills, and r WILLIAM A. GALBRAITII.
