' AUGER FOR BRICK MACHINES.

UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIclE.
RAYMOND c. PENFIELD, or WILLOUGHBY, OHIO, ASSIGNOR 'ro J. w.
PENFIELD & SON,
or SAME PLACE.
AUGER FOR BYRICKLMACHIINES. I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N6. 508,337, dated November 7,1893.
Applieationfiled June 6. 1893.
are provided on the back or rearward faces and near the periphery thereof with reinforcing ribs to render the auger blades more durable.
The accompanying drawing is a side elevation of an auger embodying my invention.
A represents the hub of the auger and B B the blades thereof. The hub is usually conical or conoidal and is cast integral with the blades thereof, .the latter trending spirally around the hub as shown. As is Well known this Variety of anger operates in a pugging box and forces the material out through the die, all of which is too well known to require illustration or further description.
In operating the auger the pressure of the auger blades on the material is very great, and the sliding of the blades on the material, together with the sharp gritty character ofthe material wrought upon causes excessive wear on the auger blades, by reason of which such auger blades are short lived. Such wear of course comes on the front face of the blades and the most of the wear accrues at and near Serial No. 476,795. (No model.)
constructed with ribs on the front face of the blades at the periphery thereof to increase the wearing capacity of these blades, but these ribs decrease the working capacity of the auger, for the reason that these ribs were not effective in forcing the material toward the dies, but to the extent thereof they lessened or covered up that much of the working area of the blades, and that too where the blades were most effectiveto wit, at and near the periphery of the blades. As an improvement I provide the auger blades with reinforcing ribs at and near the periphery of theblades, but these ribs are located on the back or rearward faces of the blades, as at b b where these ribs or reinforcements do not interfere with the working capacity of the blades, but materially increase the wearing capacity thereof.
What I claim is- An auger for a brick machine the spiral blades whereof are provided with reinforcing ribs located at or near the periphery of the blades on the back or rearward faces thereof substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 27th day of May, 1893.
RAYMOND C. PENFIELD.
