A is a flushing tank of any desiredconstruction provided with a flushingl vor discharge pipe B, leading from box C which in this instance, contaiussuficient water for an afterflow, that is allowed to enter the pipe B through the apertures, a. Stretching across the top of the tank is the bar F upon which all the moving parts are supported as follows: The carriage G extends transversely across th'ebar F, and is adjustable by slot c and clamped by the bolt b. To prevent lateral swaying of the carriage the rack, d, is provided on the upper surface of the bar F and teeth, e, are provided on the 'under side of the carriage to mesh with the teeth of the rack. On this carriage is supported the lever, H, pivoted at f. One end of this lever is connected to the valve E before mentioned, and the other end carries an extension piece I to the end ofwhich is attached a chain J. This extension piece I is adjusted so that it may project over the edge of the tank either at the end as shown in full lines in Fig. 2 or over either side as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When arranged in the desired position by the mechanic in fitting up'the tank, the connection is made rigid by turning up the bolt b', which is set through the semi-circular rack d', the teeth of which engage the under side of the leverI and prevent lateral movement. The valve E is norg mally'closed and the lever H, in the position The object of our invention is to provide a valve escapement which is constructedand shown in full lines in Fig. 1. When the chain J is pulled the lever H and the valve E are raised into the positions shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
There is nothing novel in the operation ot' the extension piece and the lever, when once fixed, as thus far described, the novelty consisting in the adjustable connection between the extension piece and the lever, which enables the tank to be more readily fitted by the mechanic to the position which it is intended to occupy with the extension piece projecting from the right or left side of the tank, or straight out-from the end. To do this ordinarily requires riveting, soldering, or some other work to be performed by the mechanic in itting up the tank, whereas in this case, it is simply necessary to turn the extension piece in the desired direction and then screw up the bolt b. Fig. 2,' that when the extension piece -proj ects straight over the end of the tank, it is pushed in,-while when it-projects over the side, it is pulled out. This'extensibility is attained by having the extension piece run through a slot in the bolt b.

Should the tank be refilled at any time after one or more discharges the iloat K will rise to its initial position in the usual way, and the toothed escapement, M, will also be restored to Iits uinitial position with the first tooth t inthe path of the tooth t.
