To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDRE OOZE, a citizen of the Republic of France, formerly residing at Bheims, France, but now a resident of Paris, in said country, have invented certain new and useful Apparatus for Charging G as- Retorts, (for which I have obtained Letters Patentin France, No.167,044:, dated February 14, 1885; in Germany, No. 33,959, dated March 27, 1885; in Austria-Hungary, No. 23,286 and No. 57,022, dated October 30, 1885; in Spain, No. 7,837, folio 190, dated December 22, 1885 n Italy, No. 438, folio 36, dated June 30, 1885; 1n Belgium, No. 69,316, dated June 17, 1885, and 1n England, No. 7,563, dated June 20, 1885,) of which the following is such a full, clear and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to trucks for charging gas retorts and has for its object to save labor and dispense with charging by hand.
The invention consists in features of construction and arrangement hereinafter specified, and pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be best understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a truck carrylng a tilting hopper having an adjustable chute at each end for charging the retorts. F g. 2 is a similar view of a modification. Flg. 3 is a similar view of a still further modification.
The same marks of reference indicate the same parts throughout the different views.
Fig.1 shows a double-acting (that is, adapted to discharge at each end) tilting hoppera provided with adjustable or extensible sliding chutes e e at each end for charging retorts placed at different levels, as shown in said figure. This hopper is provided with pins *0 on each end, and the chutes with longitudinal guide-slotsfwhich maintain the extensible the charging-mouth or neck I) of the retorts when charging. The wheeled truck 0 carrying the hopper has an upright frame g g at each side, for suitably guiding the hopper when tilted on one side or the other, by means of pins 8 on the hopper, working in groovest in the guide-frame, a lever y being pivoted beneath the bottom of the truck, and articulated to the hopper. The one or the other of said pins 5 engages the groove t in one or the other of the guide-frames g, according to whether the hopper is tilted to one side or the other. The guide-frames g are cutaway at u to allow the other pin 8 to escape the other guide-frame g and permit the hopper to be tilted. t are grooves in the guide-frames g through which the pins 8 travel when the hopper is returned to its horizontal position. The grooves t are curved concentrically to the axis of oscillation of the hopper.
Fig. 2 shows a single-acting tilting hopper a pivoted beneath its center by lever y carried by a wheeled truck 0, and with a vertical guide-groove t, the said groove 75' being in frame g upon the wheeled truck a, in which groove t works a pin 8 on the hopper a, the said .groove also limiting the upward and downward movements of the hopper. The wheeled truck 0 is held stationary in front of the charging-mouths b by a latch is pivoted to the truck 0, dropping into a notch in one of the rails d.
Fig. 3 shows another single-acting tilting hopper with one vertical guide-frame g, but in which the hopper a is supported on a base It mounted to oscillate on a fixed pivot carried by frame to on the truck 0, which frame to also supports the guide-frame g. 3. An apparatus for charging gas retorts, consisting of a truck carrying a tilting hopper, the body of the hopper being supported 15 by and free to slide on a base, which is mounted to oscillate on a fixed pivot, so that the mouth of the hopper may be brought in line ANDRE oozE.
