To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN W. VAUGHN, a
'citizen of the United States, residing at Ouyahoga Falls, inthe county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sheaves for Bunching Wire, of which the following is a specification. 4
' My invention has relation to improvements in that class of sheaves for bunching wire,in which the sheave consists .of two parts, united to receive the wire, and separable to permit of its removal. p
The object of my invention is, to provide an improved sheave of the class designated, adapted to and suitable for use in bunching wire in galvanizing frames, tinning machines, and other apparatus used in the manufacture of wire, both in intermediate processes and when Iinished, which shall have simple and effective locking devices for the parts of the sheave, and improved mechanism for sustaining and operating the detachable portion of the sheave.
To the aforesaid object, my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which are designed to illustrate the application of my invention to a galvanizing bench, and in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures: Figure 1, is a plan of the end portions of a galvanizing bench, the center portion beingbroken away, provided with my invention; Figs. 2, and 3, side and end'elevations of the same respectively; the latter enlarged; Figs. 4, and 5, enlarged inside and outside elevations, respectively, of the fixed and detachable halves of the sheave, with connected parts; Fig. 6, a section of the sheave at the line X, X, of Fig. 5; Fig. 7, a vertical, central, transverse section of the inner member, 6, of the sheave, showing means for operating the clutches.
` Referring to the drawings, 1, is a metallic frame, in which is journaled a series of parallel shafts 2, driven by a large gear` 3, and
runningl in the same direction by means of light gear wheels 4, and intermediate idlers 5, these wheels being mainly indicated in ontline only, and the detail of teeth being generally omitted, as their position and use only are necessary to an understanding of the invention. Near the outer ends of each shaft 2, is loosely mounted the inner half 6, of the sheave, arranged to be driven with the shaft by means ot' a clutch '7, which slides on the shaft 2, and is moved in the usual manner of operating such clutches by a lever 7', pivoted to an arm attached to the frame, 1; see Fig.
7. Each inner half 6, of each sheave is pro- 'vided with a similar clutch-lever but they have been omitted from the other gures as Vtheir location and operation will be `readily understood from this representation. The outer face of this piece 6, at the bottom of the grooved face is rabbeted to fit a corresponding iiange on the inner faceof the outer half of the sheave hereinafter described. InY side of the rim of the half 6, on suitable lugs provided for that purpose, are pivoted two rocking latches 8, 9, with their longer ends connected by a link 10, which latter is provided with a handle 1l, by which it is operated, and the latch is provided with an eX- panding spring 12, freely mounted on a rod connected at its ends with posts pivotally mounted in the piece 6, and latch 8, the oftice of which spring is to retain the latches iu position at the end of the stroke when rocked in either direction. These latches are so constructed and arranged as to project beyond the inner line of the sheave rim when rocked outward, and withdraw within it when rocked in the opposite direction. The outer half 13, is constructed of suitable shape to form with the half 6, a complete sheave, and has on the inner face of its rim a flange to tit the rabbet in' the opposite half; and a dowel-pin 14, which enters a corresponding hole in said half, to retain the halves from turning on each other. The rim of this outer half is supported byv a strong diagonal bar, in place of spokes, suitably braced by a web and having a central hub 15, which is freely mounted on a hollow journal 16, the bore of which fits the end of the shaft 2, for the purpose of facilitating the union of the two halves of the sheave cen- IOC trally, and aiording additional support for the outer half.
The journal 16, is hinged to one end of an arm 17, the opposite end of which arm is hinged to one end of a second arm 18, which latter arm is in turn hinged to the frame 1, by which arrangement the half 13, may be swung to and from the half 6,'and its. movement near the other half fora short distance being in the line ot the axis of the shaft 2, to render the union and separation of the halves more perfect.
In operation, the outer half 13, is rocked against the inner half and locked in place by rocking the latches 8, 9, by means of the link 10, and handle 11, so that their outer ends project outward and engage the outer face of the rim of the half 13, as shown in Fig. 6, and the sheave thus formed put in motion by the clutch 7,11ereinbefore referred to. The wire is then led onto the sheave from an overhead pulley 19, and caused to alternately run from side to side by a guide fork in`the end of an arm 20, connected with a rocking shaft 2l, journaled at the side of theframeand rocked by means of a crank arm 22, connecting rod 23, cam 24, and worm gearing 25, connected with the other moving mechanism, in the manner of other spooling machines, and which, as it is not a part of this invention, is introduced to illustrate the relative arrangement and operation of the sheave, and is not further described. When the sheave is full, its motion is stopped, and the wire bunch bound; the latches S, 9, are then rocked inward, and the halt` 13, withdrawn, which permits the wire bunch to be removed.
It will be apparent that a single bent arm hinged to the frame and rigidly connected with the journal 16, may be substituted for the arms 17, 18, and accomplish approximately the same purpose, but the construction hereinbetore described is preferred, as it permits the withdrawal ot the outer vhalt in right lines parallel with the axis of the shaft 2.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a sheave of the class designated, two halves having configurations to hold them centrally in place with each other, combined with latches connected with one half and ar- 5o ranged, by intermediate connections, substantially as described, to be simultaneously moved to grasp or release the other half, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a sheave of the kind specified, the combination of onehalf having a rabbeted edge and a dowel hole, the other half having a ange and pin to tit said rabbet and hole respectively, and two latches each pivotally attached to one of said halves and arranged to simultaneously grasp the otherhalf at ditferent points, a link connecting and arranged to rock said latches, and a spring to retain said latches when locked or released, substantially as shown.
3, In' a sheave of the class designated, two halves arranged to fit and be interlocked,o11e whereof is mounted on and arranged to turn with a shaft, and the other mounted on a `journal attached to a hinged arm, and arranged to be rocked against and withdrawn from the other half, substantially as shown.
4. In a sheave of the class designated, one halt sheave mounted on and arranged to re volve with a shaft, andthe other half mounted on a short journal and arranged to be rocked to and locked against the first half, combined with two arms hinged together with their opposite ends hinged to the short journal and machine frame respectively, substantially as shown.
5. The combination with the half sheave and its shaft and its locking mechanism, and the opposite half sheave arranged to tit and be locked against the first, of the short journal arranged to support the outer half and having an opening to receive the extended end 0E the journal of the first half and two arms hinged togetherand hinged to the frame and short journal respectively, substantially as shown and described.
