Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Farce,
-GAL1LUS WOEBER, 0F DAVENPORT, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREES.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GALLUS WoEBER, of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Whiffletrees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a rear view of myinvention; l ig. 2, an inverted plan of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the same taken in the line 0000, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved manner ofattachin g the \vhiffietree to the crossbar of the thills, whereby the bolt on which the whifiletree works is relieved of the strain to which it has been hitherto subjected, and the play or turning movement of the Whittletree on the bolt limited so as to avoid the use of straps hitherto employed to prevent whitfletrees when attached to a double-tree from coming in contact with the wheels, and also to prevent them, whether used single or double, from coming in contact with the legs of a horse in case of one of the traces becoming casually detached.
A represents the crossbar at the rear of a pair of thills, and B the whiffletree attached thereto.
To the center of the cross-bar A there is attached a circular metallic socket, O, which may be described as being composed of a circular plate, (I, having an upright ledge, b, all around it, and two ears, 0 c, projecting from it at opposite points, through which screws pass into the cross-bar.
At the rear side of the socket 0 there is a raised bar, (I, and below said bar there is an opening or slot, e, the bar and slot forming a guide for an arm, D, projecting from a circular metallic plate, E, attached to the under side of the whiflietree B. The plate E is secured to the whiffletree by means of screws f, which pass through ears gg, projecting from the plate, and said plate has a recess or rabhet in its edge extending all around, so that the lower part, h, of the plate may fit in the socket, and the shoulder 2', formed by the rabbet, rest upon the upper edge of the socket G, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The socket O and the plate E have a hole made centrally through them to admit of a bolt, F, passing them, and also through the whiffletree and cross-bar, the whiffletree turning on said bolt. The bolt, it will be seen, is relieved of strain in consequence of the lower part, h, of the plate E fitting in the socket U, and the arm D, in consequence of being fitted in the slot 6, limits the play or turning movement of the whiffletree on the bolt, and in case of the casual detachment of one of the traces the whifietree will be prevented from coming in contact with the legs of the horse, and when used on a double-tree the whiffletrees will be prevented from coming in contact with the front wheels of the vehicle. The straps therefore hitherto used to effect this result may be dispensed with, as also the device hitherto employed to relieve the bolt from strain.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- The socket 0, attached to the cross-bar of the thills, and provided with'the bar 61 and slot 0, to form a guide, in connection with the plate E, attached to the whiffletree B, fitted in the socket O, and provided with an arm,D, to fit in the slot 6 of 0, all being arranged and used in connection with the bolt F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GALLUS WOEBER.
