UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELVIN T. ZELLNER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CIGAR-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,607, dated October 31, 1893. Application filed January 18, 1893- Serial No. 458,792. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELVIN T. ZELLNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cityand countyofPhiladelphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Presses, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a cigar press provided with a presser head, which may be directed against the cigars to be pressed, and is capable of being adjusted in various ways, all as will be hereinafter set forth and definitely pointed out in the claims that follow the specification.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a cigar press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a rear view of a portion thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates the frame of a cigar press, having the base B, the end piece 0, back piece D and follower E forming the pressing chamber F. Secured to the follower is a screw Gto which is fitted the nut H, the latter being supported on the base B, and provided with a hand wheel for convenience of operation. The follower has connected with it the lips K, K,which freely engage respectively with the base B and back piece D for supporting and guiding said follower.
The parts thus far described are set forth in the Letters Patent No. 480,055, granted to me on the 2d day of August, 1892.
The present invention consists of parts as follows:
Ears L are secured to the end piece 0, and form the bearings for the standard M, the upper part of which is. slotted to receive the.
screws N of the ears P, said screws carrying a nut N, whereby when the ears P are adjusted in height, they are retained in position by the tightening action of said not N. Pivoted to the ears P is a lever Q on the side of which is'a tooth R, and on which is freely fitted a slide S, which is provided with a set screw S, the same being adapted to tighten against the lever Q. Depending from the slide S, and pivotally connected therewith is a presser head T, which as will be seen hangs within the pressing chamber F, and owing to the slide S may be adjusted to the right or left, as the case may be, relatively to the size of said chamber formed by the follower E. Rising from and-secured to said follower is a rack U with which the tooth R of the lever Q is adapted to engage, and thus hold the head T in operative position with a bunch of cigars that may be formed in the chamber F or in a box placed in said chamber.
A portion of the back piece D is of the form of a door V, whereby should the cigars or boxes be long, said door is opened to permit the cigars or boxes to properly occupy the chamber F.
The standard M is preferably of the form of a crank, and it rotates in the ears L, so that the lever Q may be readily moved laterally from the rack U, and restored into locking position therewith, and the head maybe properly raised and lowered,-owing to the pivotal connectionof said lever with the ears P, and said head may also be vertically adjusted owing to the adjustable position of the cars .on said standard M. The lateral motion of the lever Q is also rendered necessary, owing to the sliding motions that may be imparted to the follower E, said follower as has been stated, carrying the rack U, and consequently 8o increasing or decreasing the distance tof said rack from the standard M, so as to insure the engagement of the tooth R with either of the teeth of the rack. It will also be seen that great pressure may be exerted on the cigars 8; by the action of the lever on the head T.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cigar press having a standard mounted 0 on one of the ends thereof, a lever pivotally secured to-a bearing adjustable on said standard, a rack with which said lever is adapted to engage, and a presser head depending from and adjustably connected with said lever said'parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A cigar press having a frame with a fixed end piece, a standard rotatably mounted thereon, and a lever pivoted to an ear vertically 10o adjustable on said standard and having a presser head depending therefrom, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A c gar press having a frame with a stand ard mounted on one end of said frame, a 10- ed on said ear, the rack U connected with the ver pivotally secured on a supporting car atpress, and a depending presser head T pivottached to said standard, a tooth on said levcr ally connected with the slide S, the latter beand a rack secured to the other end of said ing mounted on said lever Q, the parts named 5 frame, said parts being combined substani being combined substantially as described.
