NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MERRIOK F. WILSON, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN OR TO THE WILSON I PAPER BOX MACHINERY COMPANY, OF ILLINOIS.
MACHINE FOR COVERING PAPER BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,605, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed October 6, 1892. Serial No. 448,036- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MERRICK F. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Machines for Covering Paper Boxes, of which the following isa specification.
This invention is an improvement on the one illustrated in Letters Patent granted to me bearing date of Aprillet, 1891, No. 450,275, and consists in the combination and arrangement of the devices described and set forth in the claims.
Reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side View thereof.
Let A be the frame of the machine, to the top of which is fastened the four vertical guide posts B, B, B, B. On the top of these guide posts B, there is fastened a connecting frame O, which supports in bearings a shieve roller D. Working in this shieve roller there is a cable 11)., one end of which is fastened to the sliding carriage F. by the bail G. and to the other end of said cable there is a weight H. The carriage F. is held by the keepers J. to the posts B. and moves freely up and down the range of its movement, since it is counterbalanced by the weight H., but will remain in any position it is placed by the operator. This carriage F. is provided with two paste vats I. I. and pivoted therein are paste rollers K. K. and on one side of which there is pivoted a small roller L. and a rod M and below the rod there is a scraper to limit the amount of paste adhering to the paste rollers, which scraper is pivoted atm and is adjusted by the screw m. The carriage F. is provided with a bracket N., supporting the rolls of paper N, N An adjustable device for cutting OK the paper is held to the frame A by the post 0. and can be adjusted to the desired heightby raising or lowering the post 0. The cutting knife P. and its attachments may be adjusted laterally by the movement of the rod 0 in its fastening with the post 0. This knife P. is pivoted at P and works against the bar P and is actuated by the foot treadle, P through the adjustable rod P connected to the pin P of the rock shaft to which the knife is attached. On the sideof the frame A there is a bracket Q, to which is fastened by means of the lug R, the mechanism for holding the box form. This lug R. is provided with radial teeth, which mesh into similar teeth on the bracket Q and is clamped together by a rose hand wheel 1. The box form is secured to the plate S. which is fastened to the axis S, held in bearings, S and adjusted laterally by the movement of the collars S and S, The collar S is provided with ratchet teeth and a pawl S arreststhe revolution of the box form in one direction. The bearings S are supported by the post V. which is adjustable by means of the keeper and set screw V which keeper is a part of the block V and is held in ways in the block V which in turn is held by the lug R. This block V is movedbaek and forward and hence the box form the same to accommodate it to the different strips of paper W. W by means of the link X. one end of which is pivoted to the block V at X and the other end is pivoted at X to a lever X pivoted to the block V and provided with a handle X by which the operator moves the box form to the position of either strip of paper.
The operation of the machine is thus: To the plate S. there is screwed a form for holding the box to be covered. And the paste pans are supplied with paste and the rolls of paper required for the covering are placed in the brackets N. and the ends thereof are trained under the roller L. and over the paste rollers K. K and down between the knife P. and its abutting bar P as shown by W. and W. The paper thus falling in a vertical position and having to pass under the roller L. it enwraps quite asection of the paste rolls K. K which gives time and surface for imparting paste to the paper, and frictional contact with the surface of the paste roll suflicient to drive it by the paper being drawn over it. Horizon tal machines for the purpose require an additional roll or a bar to train the paper around a sufficient section of the paste roll to accomplish the same ends. The operator places a box on the form on the plate S. and draws forward the sheet of paper W. which is coated with paste and by revolving the box on the axis S wraps the paper around it and then cuts it loose from the strip by his foot actuating the knife by the treadle and should he require an additional strip to be pasted to the box he shifts the form to the position of the strip WV by the lever X. and applies the strip of paper in like manner. The paper for the covering after being coated with paste requires time for the paste to act upon it before it is applied to the box lest it may crack or blister up after it is pasted and should the box which is being covered be small, requiring considerable time of the operator in applying the covering, the carriage F may be lowered down quite near the box form, but should the box be large, requiring quite a length of paper at each operation, the carriage F. is shoved up the required height to permit sufficient length of paper coated with paste in advance of its application to the box, and thus by simply moving the can riage F. up and down its ways the operator may adjust it to the requirements of the service, and the machine being vertical takes up less floor space, is more convenient of operation and by permitting the sheet of paper to fall vertically from the paste roll, avoids the necessity of additional rollers and rods and thus more readily permits the paper to be trained over the machine.
What I claim is- 1. A box covering machine having a vertically adjustable carriage carrying paste pan I. paste roller K. and roll of paper N. substantially as described.
2. A box covering machine consisting of a carriage F. carrying a paste coating device adjustable, vertically and counterbalanced so as to move freely in its adjustment in combination with mechanism for holding a box form and a cutting 0E device substantially as shown and described.
3. A box covering machine consisting of a supporting frame A. vertical guide posts B. connecting frame 0. adj nstable carriage F. and weight H. combined and arranged sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MERRIOK F. WILSON.
