WILLIAM H. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ACCOUNT-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 507,601, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed August 21, 1893- Serial No. 483,605. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Account-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is intended to lighten the labors of accountants and to lessen the danger of mistakes in carrying footings from one page to another.
The nature of the invention consists in an account book or register having its leaves cut away alternately at topand bottom, so the footings of the two last previous pages may be kept in view at all times.
In the practical use of the invention the footings are placed alternately at the top and bottom of the pages, thus insuring their being visible after the pages to which they belong are turned and work has been commenced on the next succeeding pages.
At Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings I show an open account book embodying my invention, and illustrating consecutive pages thereof. Fig. 3 is asection of the closed book upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. v
In illustrating my invention I have applied it to a voucher register. It may however be used with .many different kinds of account books.
In the drawings A A represent the covers of the book.
B B represent the pages of the leaves which are cut away at the bottom, and O O O and (1 represent the different pages of leaves which are shortened at the top. These leaves B and O are arranged in the book in alternate order, sothat one of each is placed between each pair of the other. All the pages are divided by vertical lines i'nto proper columns d, and these columns are provided with printed headings e e. The headings are not however printed except upon the pages B, inasmuch as the headings are also visible in their proper alignment with the columns of the pages 0, and thus serve for both sets of leaves.
At Fig. 1 the book is shown as opened at page 42, and in this figure there appears at the left side of the book the page B, and below said page the lower margin of page C. A row of footings m appears upon the marginal portion of page G. The row of footings n, at the top of page B are the footings of said page B with the footings m added in. Upon the right side of the book in said figure appears the page C, and the footings 0 at the bottom of that page are the footings of the entries upon the reverse side of page B, and were noted on said page 0 prior to the turning of the leaf B. The row of footings 10 which appears upon the marginal portion of page B appearingin this figure, are the sums of the entries on page 0' and the footings 0. The entries upon page 42 of the book being completed and the footings noted as already stated, the page C is turned over so that work may be begun on page 43, and the parts shown at Fig. 2 are then disclosed. In this figure the headings of page B and the row of footings 11. immediately under said headings remain still visible, and so also do the headings of page B and the footings 1a of that page. The entries are now made upon pages 0 and B, and when complete the footings are noted at the bottom of page 0 as indicated at q, and upon the lower margin of the next succeeding page 0 as shown at r. The footings upon the next numeral page, 44, will be noted in a manner similar to that shown upon numeral page 42, and those upon page 45 will be placed similarly as those upon page 43, and so on through the succeeding pages.
My invention renders unnecessaryin every case the repetition of the footings of one page upon the page next in order, because the original footings remain in sight until the next page is filled and its'footings written out, thus saving labor and preventing mistakes.
I claim- The register or account' book, having its leaves cut away or shortened alternately at top and bottom so the footings of the last two previous pages maybe keptin view, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM H. SMITH.
