Be it known that I, PETER G. KIRSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the countyof Adams and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in that class of washing machines in which an agitator is employed to operate upon the clothes, both of which are inclosed in a Water-tight suds box.

My object is to produce an improved device by which amore efficient movement of the agitator may be effected and to construct the arrangement as a whole so that it will more thoroughly wash the clothes without tearing or fraying them out.

To these ends my invention consists of certain novel features and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate my invention: Figure l represents a perspective view of my complete arrangement; Fig. 2 a vertical section; Fig. 3 a detail View of the agitator, and its operating crank or handle.

The reference letter a represents the body of my machine which is supported by legs b, and fitted with handles c. The tub a is preferably circular in shape and is provided with atop d, hinged to its upper edge. Arising upwardly from the side of lthe tub is a rigid standard e, which is provided with an overhanging arm f. This arm projects over the top of the tub just above its center and has formed in its free end a hole f which serves as a bearing for the agitator shaft g. This shaft is of a peculiar construction and is shown in detail in Figs. l and 2. Its upper end projects through the hole f in arm f, while its lower end projects through an opening in the lid d, a double crank h being formed betweem the two points, by which crank the agitator is operated. The lower end of the shaft g eX- tends some distance into the tub where it is bent horizontally at g to form a second crank. Its extremity g2 is then bent downwardly and attached to the circular agitator t'. The agitator has an opening i formed in its center through which the end g2 of shaftg, projects and at which point it is universally connected to the agitator-by means of metallic clip j and cross braces or bars lo. The under side of the agitator is provided with a number of independent Aprojections Z and a pair of serrated cross bars lo which serve to engage the clothes. Fitting within the tub are two semi-circular racks m, formed of a series of tluted lbars n, and binding strips 0. These racks tit around Vthe sides and bottom of the tub and when in place completely cover the same.

In using my improved machine the clothes are as usual placed in the tub with hot water and soap suds, or any other cleaning agent which may be used, and the agitator set to operating which serves to rub and clean the clothes.

It will be noticed, owing to the peculiar arrangement of the agitator shaft, that the agitator is given a circular course and made to act upon or traverse the whole bottom of the tub thereby getting better results than ordinarily.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a Washing machine, the combination with the tub, of an agitator shaft, an overhanging bearingfor its upper end, a double operating crank formed on the shaft between the bearing and tub into which tub the lower end of the shaft extends. a single crank formed on such end, and an agitator attachedto the single crank, substantially as described.
