Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE N. SEIDLER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
BED-BOTTOM.v
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,738, dated October 31, 1865.
' represented in the following specification and drawings.
To enable others skilled in the art to make my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction by referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this improvement will be nnderstood from the specitication and drawings, in which Figure l is a side View, broken away at or nea-r the end joint to show the arrangement and operation of mechanism for graduating the elevation of the head portion thereof. Fig. 2 is an end view, showing the head portion elevated.
The frame-work, sacking, springs, 85e., are constructed substantially as those heretofore made.
a is the foldingjoint.
b is ajoint by means of which the portion A is hung and elevated.
The side portion of the frame (from c tof) is broken away to show the metallic ratchetplate B, made circular and provided with teeth, and made fast to the frame-work D by means of a screw or pin, g, and also provided with a slot, h, near the upper end, to allow of a limited play to the upper end of the ratchet-plate.
C is a metal piece secured in a xed position to the frame-work E, and by means of which the head portion of the bottom is held in the desired position. The cord Fis passed through holes formed in the end of the frame-work, thence through loop-holes placed inside and near the upper edge of said frame-Work directly, or nearly so, over the upper end of the ratchetplate B, and secured thereto.
Now, it will be seen that by simply lil'ting the head portion A the teeth of the ratchetplate B will ride over the fixed metal piece c' till at the desired elevation, where it will be held by said metal piece C engaging with the oscillating ratchet-plate B, and by pulling the cord F said plate B will be disengaged from the holder C and allowed (the head-piece A) to fall toits level with the other portion ot' the bottom or lo any other desired position. For the purpose ot' holding the bed or sacking in its proper position while the head is turned up, I provide au eXtra piece vof sacking, 7c, (shown by red line,) secured to the main cover or sacking at or near thejoint b, which is drawn down taut and secured to the cross-piece t'.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, construction, and operation so as to enable others skilled to make and use the same therefrom.
I claim- The oscillating ratchet-plate B, in combination with the xed catch-plate E, cord F, and folding bed-bottom, substantially as and for the purpose described.
GEORGE N. SEIDLER.
