AQUILA NEBEKER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO GEORGE W. HUBER, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR MAKING TABLETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,791, dated October 17, 1893.
Application filed January 21, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AQUILA NEBEKER, a citi= zen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Device for Making Tablets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple hand-device for use by physicians and druggists and others for conveniently manufacturing tablet triturates.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail of the plunger.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I provide a cylindrical tube 1, whose lower end is slightly and gradually reduced and beveled or rounded at its outer edge forming the penetrating end 2. Above the penetrating point 2 the tube is provided with a circular fixed collar 3, and some little distance above the collar 3 with a second though slightly smaller collar 4. A
1 near the upper end thereof, and seated in the same is a set-screw 6. The tube is pro.- vided with an internal cylindrical bore 7, which bore has its upper portion increased as at 8 forming at this point an internal shoul der 9. A cylindrical plunger 10, slightly greater in length than the tube and fitting the smaller portion of the bore thereof, is located in said tube, and at its upper extremity is provided with a head 11. A slot 12 is formed in the plunger some distance below the head, and into the same extends the inner end of the aforesaid set-screw, whereby, as will be obvious, the plunger may move the length of the slot and when elevated the lower end of the plunger is some distance above the lower end of the tube, and when depressed the lower end of the plunger passes beyond the lower end of the tube. The up- Serial No. 459,160- (No model.)
per portion of the plunger is slightly greater than the lower portion, thus forming at this point an annular shoulder 14, and between the shoulder let of the plunger and the internal shoulder of the tube there is interposed a light coiled spring 15, the same beingcoiled about the aforesaid plunger and serving to normally elevate said plunger. This completes the construction of the devlce, whose operation will be at once recognlzed and understood by those conversant with the art of making tablets. In operation the device 13 grasped by the fingers of the hand of theoperator and its penetrating point 2 forced into the somewhat plastic medicament, when it will be obvious, the bore of the tube below the end of the plunger will become filled. The device is now withdrawn and any adhering portion of the medicament not within the tube is removed, which may be readily accomplished by a simple wiping of the end of the device. When forcing the device into the medicament the collar 4 serves as an abutment for the fingers of the operator, and after withdrawing and removing all adhering medicament it remains simply to place the thumb of the hand upon the upper end or head of the plunger grasping the tube in advance of the lower collar 3 between the fingers of the hand and exerting pressure by the thumb, thus forcing the plunger beyond the lower end of the tube against the tension of the spring. This discharges the tablet from the tube. After releasing the plunger from the pressure of the thumb the spring forces the same back to its normal or elevated position.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that I have provided an extremely cheap and simple device, that may be conveniently operated by a physician, druggist, or other person in the process of the manufacture of tablet triturates.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tube terminating in a penetrating end, a plunger located therein, means for limiting the movement of the plunger and for normally raising the same, of a superficial pressure-collar formed on the tube above its lower end, substantially as specified.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tube having a lower tapered external beveled end and above the same provided with large and small annular collars spaced apart, of a plunger mounted for movement in the tube, a spring for normally elevating the plunger, and a stop for to said plunger, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
AQUILA NEBEKER.
