PROCESS OF FINISHING WOOD VENEERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,601, dated October 10, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. MCCARGAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Process of Finishing WVood Veneers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and useful to process of finishing wood veneers, and the invention consists in applying the finish or stain to the side of the veneer which is attached to the stock, and drawing the same through the pores of the wood to the exposed l 5 side, or surface of the veneer with the natural grain of the wood uninjured. And the objects of my invention are,-first, to preserve intact the natural grain and texture of the wood; second, to provide a finish which can not be injured by wear, and, third,to produce a veneer finish which will at all times retain its color and texture, and which in case of injury can be refinished so as to present its original appearance. These objects I accomplish by means of a process hereinafter described.

The process consists in applying a staining or filling material to the under side of the veneer or to that side of the veneer which is 50 to be attached to the stock or object to be covered by the veneer, and then attach the veneer so prepared by means of glue or cement to the body by means of presure necessarily used in making the attachment of veneers;

3 5 said pressure forcing the stain or filling into the pores of the wood of the veneer bringing out or emphasizing, as it were, the grain of the wood upon the exposed surface of the veneer. The stain or filling may be applied directly to the under side of the veneer, and

the glue may be spread either upon the veneer or upon the stock, as found most convenient; or, instead of placing the stain or filling material upon the veneer directly, it

may be placed in the glue or cement and then SerialNo-475fl55. (Specimens) the veneer attached by pressure in the ordinary manner. The pressure necessary to make the glue joint or veneer attachment, forces the filling or coloring material into the pores of the Veneer completely filling the same. By this process the veneer will always retain its color, and as the color is applied upon the under side and is pressed through the veneer the exposed side of the veneercovering can be varnished and refinished at any time in caseit becomes marred or injured. The veneer can thus be stained in any color or shade to s l'lgt the taste or fancy of the users of my process.

In finishing veneers in the ordinary mannor, by staining or otherwise, or subjecting the exposed side to any composition, the grain of the wood is more or less injured and the finish is easily marred or injured by wear. By my process the finishing or fillingbeing done upon the unexposed side of the veneer, entirely fills the pores of the wood and the exposed surface can thus be finished in any wellknown method of finishing, and can be refinished from time to time as long as any portion of the body of the veneer remains.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein described process of preparing wood veneer surfaces, which consists in ap plying the coloring or filling material from the under side of the veneer, attaching the veneer byglue or cement with pressure, thereby forcing the coloring matterinto and through the pores of the veneer to the exposed surface, substantially as described.
